Choosing books for kids
Well, I think C. S. Lewis said all there is to say:
I never wrote down to anyone. . . it certainly is my opinion that a book worth reading only in childhood is not worth reading even then.
To start with, the best children's literature - like all literature - presents some problem that needs resolution, as in Caps For Sale, in which the cap seller must get his caps back from the rascally monkeys. In the end the story shows how the problem is resolved and reestablishes feelings of security and well-being, as in Good Dog, Carl.
Better yet, it will teach a lesson, very subtly, along the way as in Where's Our Mama? which reminds children to stay in the same place when they are lost, while validating each listener's belief that her Mama is the best.
I thought it might be fun to add "Reading to the Kids" to my Book Lists. Keep in mind that these are books that stand the test of time - I've been reading them for 35 years!

Barbara, I've really been enjoying your blog. The CS Lewis quote is great and reminds me of the wonderful joys of being a parent --- getting to read all the great children's books again and again!
Speaking of books, you've been tagged

Barbara, I love promoting the oldies but goodies. Please do keep sharing which books you've found work well with kids. I've linked.
