Leftover socks, leftover shoes

Amy's humble musing on leftover socks left an indelible impression on me, as it probably did on every mother privileged to view Amy's visual tribute to the little things our lives are made of.

And in a way, isn't it a testament to that Elisabeth Elliott piece on motherhood that you can take something ordinary and lowly, and by looking at it from a different perspective, find its true nobiilty? The blogging world is helping us do that, don't you think? And Amy's picture and Jasmine's the other day from cleaning out her closet become our Ebeneezers.

Anyway, I was reminded of this today when I cleaned out an 8' long closet between our back door and laundry room which holds jackets and umbrellas and whatever footwear the 11 current members of this household deem unworthy to be carried to their bedrooms. After filling a Goodwill bag with shoes that no longer fit anyone and arranging the remaining pairs neatly, I was left with this:

IMG_1481.jpg

Note: the two shoes on the left, which may at first glance appear to be a pair are not. They are for a person with two left feet - who we could possibly match up with the barefoot person with two right feet.

How, you might ask, could a family end up with 8 unmatched shoes?

(Looking down and shuffling feet embarrassedly)Even after all this time as a mother, I really don't know.

Love,
