New York, here we come!
I know my daughter Jasmine has been keeping everyone abreast of their homeselling nightmare - well, actually, for us it was just a pleasant summer diversion of having Jasmine, hubby and our four darling grandchildren live here for a couple weeks.
So today was the big move-out of Grandma and Grandpa's. All Jasmine's still-at-home brothers and sisters are at jobs or day camp. I had errands to run and came home to the emptiest house ever. No Gabby, Katy, Christian or Lizzy. No happy sounds of little children playing. Just a big house with no one in it.
At least until I start making the rounds to pick up Sophia, Maddy, and Jonny from drama camp at 3. Then Jesse, Daniel and Justin come home at 4:30 from the Adaptive Recreation camp. Then big guys Zach and Ben come home then too from their jobs at the camp.
Then dinner and chores.
Then tomorrow - TA DA - Tripp and I are taking our first time away together in 15 years. We are driving to New York and spending three nights just a block from the theater district. I have tickets to see Altar Boyz off-Broadway and The Producers on. I have tour tickets for the art museums.
I planned the whole thing as a surprise and told Tripp two weeks ago. You should have seen the look on his face! And the look on our kids' faces - they are still trying to wrap their minds around the fact that mom and dad are actually going away!
I am leaving a volume of notes on how to do things like pack the Downzers' lunches, give Daniel his vitamin B12 hidden in a spoon of yogurt and clean Jesse's ears without too much disturbance. We are blessed that Ben's girlfriend Anna (together they are known as Benana) has volunteered to drop off and pick up kids at camp.
It is hot and MUGGY on the East coast, which I guess is why I got a good deal on a New York hotel - no one else is crazy enough to go there. I will take my camera and blog. Well, maybe. I'm sure there will be a lot of curiosity about how two aging workaholic megaparents manage four days of down time :)
We are driving because we both love to find off-the-beaten-track ways to get from one place to another. Tripp is a California native, and has never been to New York or through the states in between, so we are looking forward to hours of just poking around on the way there and back.
I know, I know, I just got back from Denver. This is not my usual life. But there was this little window of opportunity and my hubby has been working so hard I just had to make him do something fun!
