Advice on teen/tween blogging?

computerfriendly.jpg

Okay, now I'm asking you all for advice.

Does anyone out there have a very young blogger? If so, can you tell me what blog type is hip and friendly and safe? What special safeguards did you put in place? Tell me everything I need to take into consideration before zooming off into the wild blog yonder.

Love,

When I started bloggging, one of the few blog books I found to skim :) at B&N was John Gosney's Blogging for Teens. It's on Amazon if you want to take a look at it.

Teaching kids to be safe on the net is the modern day version of teaching them about the possible bears in the woods.

My teenagers blog at xanga. I think it's safer because it's not on rss feed and not connected to the search engines. Also people must have a xanga account (free) in order to comment on your xanga, and you can easily ban anyone who makes inappropriate comments from commenting on your blog. Lots of teenagers and college students blog at xanga.

While Xanga does offer comments only for those with a Xanga that is not fool proof. Anyone can get an account and then comment. And many do.

Really I think in the end they are all about the same. Safety comes when the parent is there while the child is blogging. We only have one computer and when anyone is blogging someone else is always there to watch exactly what is going on. The two youngest girls just started a blog at Homeschool Blogger. They have enjoyed getting immediate feedback from other homeschool girls their age.

I think alot of it is content driven. If the content of your blog is purposeful then the commenters will usually be respectful. That's what we have found so far.
