Four Day School Week
Jackson County, Kentucky has cut the school week to four days.
Isn't this a great idea? I mean, having had kids in public, private, and home school, I can tell you the dirty little secret is that you can get through the curriculum in about 1/3 to 1/4 the time formal school requires. Which leaves a lot of time to learn more about artists, composers, books, movies - not to mention the Bible.
So yay, Jackson County. That's one down, 3085 more American counties to go!

I love the idea! But what are the parents going to do with these kids on that extra day? Day care? Or will the kids run free?
I went to a parochial school for a few years during my childhood that only did academics during the morning hours (8 am to 12 noon), and every afternoon we did something interesting: woodwork, art lessons, apprenticeships, sewing, cooking, hiking...
It was wonderful and that was the only period of my education where I actually enjoyed school!

That makes me feel better. We only school 4 days a week because my daughter takes a dance class that's over an hour away. So we make a day of it, have lunch with my grandfather and visit my parents. I have been feeling like I should add some academics in there somewhere, but maybe I shouldn't.

I could not school five days a week even if I wanted to LOL. We seem to need a day for piano lessons, dr appointments, etc. I wish our fifth day were more cultural. Oh all the things I plan to do in our homeschool that never come to fruition.
I'm just overwhelmed teaching the basics to a 6th grader, a 3rd grader, 1st grader, a 4 year old with downs syndrome. And keeping a 2 year old boy entertained and content. And expecting a 6th child.....
