A Night with the Stars

Here's how to create a very special family moment/memory.

It takes a lot of discipline though!

Get your older kids up at 3am tonight. Heat up some hot chocolate. Wrap yourselves in sleeping bags and lie out on your lawn looking at the night sky.

Before dawn tomorrow morning is the best time to see the Orionids meteor shower, part of the debris from Halley's Comet. Find out all about it here.

Of course, it works best if you live in a rural area or someplace relatively free of night light pollution . And the moon isn't cooperating tonight as we're just waning from a full moon.

(Btw, both of these links are good to share with your scince-minded kids.)

Still, you never know. We did this a few times when we lived in California - also woke up to see the space shuttle fly over in the wee morning hours - now, that was dramatic! Older kids may balk at getting up, but they'll thank you for it and be proud of the old fogeys for having such a spirit of adventure.

Love,

we did this once about 5 years ago, down to the hot chocolate! can't remember what we were looking at but some kind of heavenly body shower. It was a blast, my homeschool mom friend and I found a field to take the kids to and they were all excited, nobody balked. Next day we discovered we'd been lying on cowpies.

Thanks for the heads up, all puns intended.
