Very Special Book Pick
Been uploading more books under Barbara's Picks, and - as I go along - appreciating what a rich cultural world we can provide for our kids from the earliest days. Lots of these books are available in paperback for just the cost of a video rental.
The library is great, but it is a good idea - especially if you're planning on having a number of kids - to begin building your own kids' library. Look at garage sales and second hand stores. Ask for books for Christmas gifts too - you can always send grandparents to Barbara's Picks for good ideas!
Anyway, if you are planning on just one book for your child for Christmas, I would recommend People ,

- an incredibly rich child-friendly resource of information about the diversity of people and cultures. With beautiful and absorbing illustrations - beginning with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and covering all sorts of human complexities since, this is a book your child will spend hours with and learn much from.
Just in case you didn't know, if you follow the link to People at amazon, you can click on "Search Inside" for a small taste of the rich illustrations. I think you'll love this and your kids will too. And it's worth it to spend the extra couple dollars to get the hardback so it will last through all your children.

I love Peter Spier's work. I found this one used, somewhere. He has a great one on Noah's Ark, also.
