Jonny's State of the Union

Tripp was out chauffeuring Sophia to see a friend in a play and then to choir practice; Maddy went to bed early (still recovering from the tonsils out); Jesse, Daniel and Justin had fallen asleep - so that left Jonny ( my 13 year old son with Down syndrome) and I to watch the State of the Union message together.

Jonny was thrilled.

When President Bush walked into the chamber, he started applauding wildly, and saying "My friend, my friend" - which is usually reserved for stars in Les Mis or Phantom of the Opera. He ran upstairs and grabbed a notebook and pen, insisting I take notes for him.

It was just so fun to see how excited he was, standing and applauding at all the appropriate moments. He brings so much enthusiasm to everything - football games, American Idol, and now I've discovered, appearances by President Bush!

The real kicker was that he has decided he wants his hair cut like President Bush's - even though he has been growing it out long so he can shake it when he sings like a rock star. When he showed me how he wanted it cut close above his ears, I said "Are you sure, Jonny?" and he shook his head yes emphatically. The last thing he did before saying goodnight was to remind me that we had a haircutting date tomorrow after school.

Love,

Ahhh, Johnny's a Dew Man....that speaks volumes to my heart. :)

That must have been just the greatest thing to watch. Wish Dubya knew he had a fan like Johnny.

"My friend! My friend!" -- Well, there surely is no greater moniker to be granted to President Bush.

Thank you, Barbara and Johnny, for blessing us all!
