Oprah disses homeschoolers

oprah.jpg

Oprah's National High School Essay Contest is open to students in grades 9-12 who are residents of the U. S. and enrolled in public or accredited private schools.

Michael Farris, Presindent of the Home School Legal Defense Association, has written a letter to Oprah, includiing the following:

Homeschooling is growing rapidly and there are an estimated 2 million homeschooled children. All the research shows that homeschooled students score well above the national average on standardized tests. I'm confident that you would have received many excellent 1,000-word essays from homeschooled students answering the question "Why is the book Night by Elie Wiesel relevant today?"

You can read the whole letter here - where you will also find the address of Harpo Productions in case you want to write too.

How funny. One of Oprah's favorite books is To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. Harper Lee's only stipulation for the essay contest given in her honor for the past five years was that homeschoolers be allowed to compete. (HT Hannah Im)

Thank you Julana. I am delighted to read this, as one who almost named my child 'Scout' before Demi Moore stole it...
