Thy word I have hid in my heart. . .

bible-2.jpg

I've said before I don't have a lot of time to go a-visitin' other blogs (say that with a Southern accent, which I hope I'm showing more of sine moving to Virginia three years ago, though the area I live in isn't very thick).

But God seems to make sure I get to the right places at the right time. The host for the radio interview I did Friday mentioned how important Scripture memorization had been to him - his parent required it and as an adult he was the wiser for it. He mentioned the Navigators Memorization Plan, but I was so busy and distracted that day I didn't pick up on it. Actually, now that I found the link, I probably would have clicked off in hopelessness because it looks pretty darn intimidating!

But when God wants to send me a message and I'm too busy, he is gracious to give me reminders (and I pray I will respond the first time from now on - doing it his way is just so much easier, why not do it to begin with?)

Then this morning I was tracking back on a comment from Robin to her blog In Pursuit Of (thanks, Robin) and was teased further down the trail away from fixing my kids' breakfast to someone I wish I had time to read every day: Blest With Sons. She's running a contest to give away a free book -

The biography of Dawson Trotman. I love this book! I always think of Dawson Trotman as “The coolest Christian you’ve never heard of”.

Here's the comment I left:

I was 38 years old when I became a believer. Though I homeschooled my kids for years and taught the Bible, it never came as easily to me. To this day, I'm always asking my husband and my kids as I come to a place in my writing, "You know where that verse is that says . . . ?"
Or running for my concordance or Bible Gateway. At 57 I know I'm at even more of a disadvantage, but I am determining here and now to be more purposeful in this.

I will be going for a verse a day and keeping a notebook. I will begin with James 2:12-13.

I really want to do this! I can tell because I'm excited! I really do want to know Scripture better! And I believe I can! Maddy and I have started walking together, and we can memorize together too.

We'll start this morning with

Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment!
James 2:12-23.

And hey, I found this place that will email and/or text message you a verse a day. I've just signed up myself on Daily Bible!

Love,

I used to be the publicist at NavPress (the Navs publishing arm). We once had a Scripture memory kit for kids (adults used it too : ) that worked like a recipe box with laminated cards, etc. I wonder if they still have it?

My daughter, husband and I are all working on passages. A friend who owns a Christian bookstore lets us pay for books (and, currently, accessories for my daughter's Millie Keith doll...) using Mrs. Bookstore's favorite currency: MEMORIZED BIBLE PASSAGES. No single verses, must be complete thoughts and must be able to recall them when quizzed randomly. Fathers get double credit because she loves to encourage Heads of Household to treasure God's Word.

I know we should just do it on our own, but tangible rewards always make it fun. When I learned of an opening in her limited program", (it's just from her own creative heart, not an official program) we jumped at it!

Thank you so much for this - and for your comments on my site. I don't think there's any better boost than finding out that God controlled the timing and used the writing... know what I mean?

Oh! You should so read Blest With Sons everyday. It is one of the best blogs out there!

(That is how I found you, from her review of your book...that I plan on purchasing!!)
