Small Beginnings

This book was published 10 years ago and when Broadman&Holman discontinued it, I bought the remaining copies, which I have been selling since.

Just want to let you know that I'm just sending my last copy to Amazon (except for a few I'm keeping for publishers). Amazon still has a dozen copies to sell, and today there are 17 used copies available at amazon starting at $1.92.

I am planning on finishing The Mommy Survival Guide today and then need to work on either self-publishing Small Beginnings or finding a publisher who wants to work with me on updating it. Your prayers for me and my family have meant a lot, and so I'd like to ask you to pray that God would lead me in the right direction with this.

In the meantime, while finishing the manuscript and teaching Maddy, I have five days worth of laundry for eight people piled up because my dryer has been broken. But Sears came yesterday and we're back in business. I never thought I'd be so happy to do laundry!!!!

Which goes to show, it's all in your perspective, isn't it? Oh, and thinking how it used to be, I'm thanking God for my fabulous front load washer and dryer!

Love,

I know i should be commenting on your book but I have not had a chance to read that one yet. I just finished laundry room (another reason you probably can't wait to do laundry) and an in the middle of mommy manual. Wonderful!
ANyway, do you use that special soap? I can't seem to find any stores that sell it and the sears store we bought from just told us to use half of the normal soap we already use. Just wondering...
PS, glad the book is almost done. I think of you and your writing that book quite often! Glad it's coming along since tomorrow is the 15th!

How does Small Beginnings differ from Mommy Manual?

I was thinking of purchasing SB last week, as a gift to a friend who has recently married and got a lovely stepdaughter (age 3) in the bargain. My friend will not have primary custody, but she has been a professional for years and is approaching mommyhood with much discipline and perfection. Which book would you suggest?

And, is a pegboard too baby-ish a gift for an almost-4-year-old?

I got a used copy of SB off of Amazon and have read all but the exercises. It's made me rethink how I have arranged my son's play area. With very little space(2 bedrm condo) I've wished you could come by and help me figure out how to organize the place better! I think I'm just an hour away! :-) Wish I could lure you with some homemade cookies! ;-)

BTW, thank you for writing about the pegboards. I plan to purchase the one on Amazon for my son's 3rd birthday.

Oh Laurie, only an hour away! Our mom's group had Barbara come to speak. It would have been fun for you to join us! Barbara was wonderful!! Janet

I received Small Beginnings and the Mommy Manual for Christmas. I LOVED Small Beginnings and think it's a must read. It was so clear, so easy to read. I loved how it related the things I am teaching him now to his relationship with Jesus.
I hope you can update the book and keep it out there as a wonderful resource.

Hi Deb - There is some overlap between Small Beginnings and The Mommy Manual as far as discussing the general principles of bringing up kids to become good learners: how to develop their sense of order, concentration and independence. SB then goes off into what is known in Montessori as Practical Life exercises - which are all put together by the teacher (mother) to encourage the development of those skills - explaining the theory behind them, how to set them up, how to present them.
The Mommy Manual goes into more about building character and creating family unity - celebrating holidays and building a legacy for your family.

A pegboard is probably too babyish for a birthday gift for a four year old, but a Light Bright would accomplish the same thing and add some other challenges.

Janet: Thanks - that was a good Saturday morning we spent together! Do you have a front loader too? The detergent is hard to find. I can usually find it at Giant, sometimes at Target or Walmart. When I do find it, I stock up. The repairman told me that the other kind is VERY bad for the washers - ironic, since Sears doeasn't carry it.

I just finished reading Small Beginnings after having purchased it some time last summer. I really enjoyed it since my Bump is cruising in on 2 next month. I have the Mommy Manual as well. I find them to be similar (some of the same areas covered), but different in the emphasis that is placed. I think Small Beginnings focuses on more the early years, while Mommy Manual is more into building through their childhood...

Both are good reads!
