Media and Kids - Choosing Wisely
Anyone who's been visiting my site for more than a little while knows I am a strong advocate of parents making wise media choices. Since my oldest daughters are 36 and 30, and I still have teenagers at home, I have really raised two generations of kids.
Samantha and Jasmine now each have five children of their own. Many of you reading here are their age and so grew up in the same culture. But as my interviews of teens across the country for my last book, Dirty Dancing at the Prom and Other Challenges Your Christians Teens Face: How Parents Can Help revealed, kids today are dealing with a much more polluted environment. Parents must work much harder today not only in making choices for younger kids, but in educating older ones to make wise choices themselves.
Sources I have mentioned in the past for media reviews include Plugged In, MovieGuide, and ScreenIt!.
Today I received this email:
Hello Barbara Curtis,Would you consider linking to us?
Common Sense Media is a trusted source for family friendly reviews and a great resource for parents looking for age appropriate media for their kids. We review movies, television, music, video games, books, magazines, and even websites, and rate them according to content and recommended age range. We teach parents what’s good to watch, what they should watch out for, and how to talk to their kids about it.
I have spent some time checking out this site and am really impressed. Their scope goes beyond movies to all media. Although not overtly religious, the reviews I read described the moral issues accurately and suggested ways to discuss individual movies with your children.
After checking it out thoroughly, I have decided not only to recommend this site, but to put a permanent link on my sidebar to make it easy for you to check out any media your child is interested in. By all means, keep the other resources I've mentioned and if you have time, check them too. But a visit to Common Sense Media may tell you everything you need to know to make wise choices for your family.
And don't forget to teach your children as they grow how you make your decisions so that they can learn to make them too!
