Readers' thoughts on dieting

I managed to maintain my weight loss while away last week - even though it seems like all they do is feed you at Mount Hermon :) - and they serve great food!

But that's not for me right now. I just ate lots of vegetables, apples, grapefruit, and small servings of whatever protein food they had. My treats for the week were salad dressing on my salad and one diet coke each day (since I gave up coffee and carbonated beverages, a diet cook is a rare treat). My relationship to food is just different now. I'm not a slave anymore.

Two editors are interested in my dieting book - which is not a how-to, but a why-you-can-do- it source of encouragement.

I've heard from quite a few readers who've started dieting too. I am blessed to know that!

One reader wrote:

Dear Barbara,

If you have time this is a link for an article on obesity in America and how frequently folks think everyone else is fat but themselves. They overestimate their height and underestimate weight.

I reread your dieting posts today and look forward to your message (book) on weight control for the believer. I have already been helped by two ideas: entitlement thinking and the banker's access to money.

I discovered that I personally think all the food in the house is under my control, especially if I shopped for it and I cook it. I then use it to treat others. Wouldn't I make a great bank teller!!! Bizarre! I fired the food policewoman and am now giving non food treats, especially trying to specifically think of something that is truly personal from me, such as a kind act or compliment. They say 95% sex is in the brain, well that goes for fat and eating habits too. I have to reprogram my thinking. I was surprised to discover my possessiveness about our food. My husband earned it for us all, if anyone had entitlement he would. I am supposed to just be a good steward.

And another - who is pregnant but inspired to plan a strategy for losing the weight after the baby sent me this link:

Am I Fat?

Looks like a lot of good information here. The more we are honest with ourselves and the more we learn, the better equipped we are to get in shape and stay there!
