Saturday morning / Contest update

It's Saturday morning. Tripp is off to the Saturday Men's Breakfast at church. All the big kids are still asleep. I've fed Jesse, Daniel and Justin and they're dressed and working on big floor puzzles in the foyer. I've cleaned out the refrigerator, done some dishes and laundry.

I have The Messiah on as background music. I really want to urge you all to get a copy of this magnificent music for your family. Even if, like me, you grew up in a home with no appreciation for calssical art and music, it is never too late to acquire one and pass on a richer legacy to your children. Tripp and I have found that these things have enriched our family life and created a special bond between us and our children. And theater, too, of course - our kids love Shakespeare because we introduced it early. And the wonderful thing about classical art and music for Christian families is that so much of it is about the Bible and our faith. The Messiah is simply a collection of scripture - prophesies about our Savior - set to beautiful music. If you are unfamiliar with classical music, it is a great place to start. And studies show that children exposed to classical music score higher on intelligence tests - particularly math.

There are a couple things I shamelessly plug here because they have so enriched my life and my family's - most notably Elisabeth Elliot and the arts.

In an hour or so, I'll go to the used curriculum sale at my church, Maddy in tow - then further down the road for auditions for Fiddler on the Roof for my little songbird.

Just want to catch up on a few things with you all.

I didn't get a whole lot of writing done last week, but a lot is going on in my head and on little notecards where I record different ideas. I was still catching up from the wedding, but feel like everything is now under control and I can really buckle down next week. I would appreciate your prayers. Some of you have sent me some great pictures for possible inclusion in the book. Thank you so much! Still looking for more - especially -for those of you familiar with Small Beginnings exercises - your kids working with tweezers, tongs, basters, rice pouring, carrying a bell, etc.

I have decided to go with the Apologia Science curriculum and ordered the book and - especially because Maddy is an auditory learner - the CD-ROM. From your comments, it seemed like a no-brainer. Thanks for being there for me.

Been really excited about the commenting going on here. Wish I had more of Where's Our Mama? to give everyone for sharing your stories - which help all us moms feel less guilty and ashamed of the mistakes we've made (the important thing is learning from them, right?). I will run the contest through 11:59 PM Monday. Tuesday you all can email me the five stories which resonated the most with you and I will announce the winners Wednesday morning. Actually, I don't mean for this to be a competition about the "best story" because they're all instructive for all of us. But alas, I only have five copies, so we have to decide who to give them to. If you don't win a copy or haven't commented and would like them, I suggest you click here, where you can get a hardbound library copy for just a couple dollars plus postage. Can't beat that! The story line and the reassurance it offers children - not to mention the illustrations - make this one of my all-time favorite kids' books.

I really appreciate all of you!

Love,

Amen to the Messiah!! Has your family ever been to the sing along at the Kennedy Center? It is usually Dec. 23 or so. We lived in Maryland for 9 yrs. and attended this wonderful event several times. It is so amazing to see all walks of life gathered singing praise to God. I think I will go and get my CD out and listen today!! Thanks for the reminder. I have really enjoyed your blog for months now. I often wish still was in Maryland so we could grab a coffee (or whatever you are drinking now) and chat. Bless you!

We haven't gone to the Kennedy Center for the sing-along Messiah, but have gone to others. They are wonderful!

And hearing it at a symphony is a wonderful treat too, although I had to restrain myself from jumping out of my chair and lifting my arms to heaven!
