Seen around my kitchen

So many things around us have a story! As I was cooking dinner tonight - well, I made the rice and veggies while Tripp grilled the meat - I saw a couple things I wanted to share with you.

This, quite simply, is the best rice in the world. Now, please understand I'm not much of a rice lover and rarely touch the stuff, but my family loves it. I do love the burlap bag with zipper this rice comes in. I buy it at Costco.

I know this looks like a rather unremarkable zucchini, but it is HUGE. And besides, it has a story: Yesterday as I was working on my book there was a knock at the back door. Strange. A man was standing there with bags full of tomatoes, squashes and cucumbers. He said, "I heard you have a big family and thought you might be able to use these." Isn't that the sweetest thing? When something like that happens, I always feel like God just reached right down and gave me something himself - because I know he gave the giver a nudge, whether the giver knows it or not. So as silly as it sounds, just seeing this squash makes me feel loved and cared for.

This is now the hot item in our kitchen - an electric juicer I recently bought from Amazon. A couple months ago I would have thought it was a completely unnecessary waste of money. Now I give thanks for finding something under $20 that has helped improve the quality of our lives.

That's because at least four Curtises are now hooked on starting the day with the juice of a freshly squeezed lemon in a glass of warm water. You should have seen us all struggling with the lemons before - not to mention the pitiful results of our fervent squeezing.

Why lemon? Check out these benefits:

*Cleanses the digestive system.

*Relieves symptoms of indigestion such as heartburn, bloating and belching.

*Controls constipation and diarrhea by eliminating waste more efficiently.

*Good Source of Vitamin C.

*Enhances the beauty of your skin, rejuvenating it from within.

*Cleanses and aids in eliminating waste in the liver.

Some claim that drinking lemon juice eliminates the need for deodorant. And lemon juice is a great astringent and hair rinse.

We're buying lots of bags of lemons from Costco now. Makes me long for our old lemon tree in Petaluma - but that was before I knew how valuable lemons are. So now when I use our little juicer each morning, I am grateful we found this really easy way to boost our health. Much better than the coffee we used to drink - loaded with half and half and all those extra calories, too.

This is a bowl my son Josh made a couple years ago. Isn't it beautiful? The wood is walnut and Josh crafted it to show off the burls in the wood. It's really part bowl and part work of art. I love the way it looks when it is full of lemons:

I know this is a little random. Just some things I wanted to share.

I love the rice in a burlap bag. I am going to check for it next time I go to Costco. The zuccini story is great. Isn't he the nicest man. You are so lucky to be the receiver of a gift like this. Kind of like a random act of kindness. I think the juicer is cool too. I have never used one, but I might think of buying one someday. The ultimate picture was the bowl. I love the beautiful wood. It is so much fun to receive something like this from one of the kids. To me more precious than diamonds.

My dad grew up in India as an MK so we almost never used any other type of rice in our house. It was a very happy day for us when we saw that Sam's had started carrying these big bags. I'm more of a pasta girl, but nothing has the flavor of a good basmati.

Interesting stuff about lemons. Where did you find info on them and do you know if juice in a bottle works, at least temporarily?

Love the bowl, it looks like it works perfectly in your living room. Which is very lovely, BTW. :-)

Barbara,

I have been drinking water with lemon juice since there was a discussion about it on the Choosing Home forums. It does make a difference, doesn't it?

And I LOVE LOVE LOVE the bowl! :)

I buy the same rice from Costco. It's my absolute favorite (I actually have two bags right now - don't need to buy more for a while). The bowl is just gorgeous.

I would love to hear exactly how you make this lemon juice, what part water to what part lemon...? would i need to drink it in a preventitive sense or as the heartburn comes on? (every night at 8pm on cue lol) and that bowl is gorgeous! i love it! thanks for this post :)
