Book meme

TulipGirl tagged me for this meme - which I shouldn't be doing because I'm supposed to be finishing a book. Just couldn't resist because - well, because I love books and people asking me questions about books.

1. One book that changed your life:
The Absorbent Mind by Maria Montessori. It was 1969 and I was a young mother of 21 from a bad background who wanted desperately to be a good mom, reading everything I could get my hands on to learn how to doit. Checked this one out of the library and by the time I’d finished reading it, decided to become a Montessori teacher. How could I know that where it would matter most was in the family of 12 children I’d one day raise? And the experience I would have to share with other mothers? Though my life took a few beginning detours, God had a plan.

2. One book that you’ve read more than once:
Les Miserables by Victor Hugo – a book rich in redemption and grace (click here for review).

3. One book you’d want on a desert island:
The Bible – actually it would probably be good for me to have only that to read. As someone who grew up without it and scoffed at Christianity for many years, I find the Bible continues to astonish me with its insights and wisdom.

4. One book that made you laugh:
Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation by Lynn Truss

5. One book that made you cry:
Nicholas Nickelby by Charles Dickens – or any of his books that expose the mistreatment of children in nineteenth century England.

6. One book that you wish had been written:
How to Achieve the Wisdom of a Sixty Year Old While Still in Your Twenties When You Need It

7. One book you wish had never been written:
I have to agree with Tulip Girl, who said : "I've seen Babywise listed more than any other single title. *L* But I'll still join in wishing Gary Ezzo had never opened a word doc." I've been preaching against the Ezzo method since 1995, which you can read more about here.

8. One book you’re currently reading:
I’m between books right now – just finished Same Kind of Different As Me by Lynn Vincent. Tonight I plan to start Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight: An African Childhood by Alexandra Fuller.

9. One book you’ve been meaning to read:
Crunchy Cons: How Birkenstocked Burkeans, Gun-Loving Organic Gardeners, Evangelical Free-Range Farmers, Hip Homeschooling Mamas, Right-Wing Nature Lovers, and Their Diverse Tribe of Countercultural Conservatives Plan to Save America by Rod Dreher

I'm supposed to tag five people, but let's do it this way: the first five people who want to be tagged, just claim this meme for yourself and let us know you've posted. I can't for the life of me figure out this trackback thing.

*grin* So glad you joined in!

And Les Mis. . . what a great choice.

Btw, sorry about the trackback. . . it's broken.

#6 - I second that. If anyone who has a good amount of Christian wisdom wants to write a book like that, I will read it. I just turned 31 this month (and gasp! my oldest will be 16 in two months!) but I'm close enough to my 20's that it counts :-)
