The Biggest Loser
Watched the second week of The Biggest Loser last night. It's so exciting to see these people waging a war with their weight and winning.
The trainers are so wonderful at motivating and loving them through the process.
And I was so surprised by the outcome last night. For those who don't watch the show, two teams compete and at the end of each week there is a weigh-in in which every member is weighed and the team who loses the most weight - not in pounds, but in percentage of the total weight - wins. The losing team must eliminate someone.
This is standard reality fare and done dramatically, one by one. The team invariably eliminates the weakest member, so it seemed obvious last night they would send home the woman who had lost the least amount of weight in the group - 15 pounds in two weeks as opposed to most who'd lost in the 20s and 30s (they are under a rigorous physical program). It was sad because she was feeling horrible about herself and her meager loss. She knew she was dependent on the group and feared going home where she would probably fail at continuing to lose weight.
The amazing thing was that they voted off a very confident woman who everyone liked and who was doing great. Their reasoning was that they knew she was most likely to succeed continuing at home alone. The members of the team all care for each other and there is no backstabbing, so they had a hard time voting anyone off at all. Instead of choosing the weakest link, though, they chose a strong one.
It was really cool.

That is cool. I know that over on our weight loss site, it has been really hard for me to decide whether or not to boot people who aren't meeting our minimal requirement of weighing in each Monday. I was just on the verge of "getting tough" and asking a few to leave to make room for others when I found out the very personal reasons why they hadn't been as fired up as the others. A little compassion changed everything...
