Free downloadable flash cards, coloring pages, art
I wanted so much to link you to a cool craft involving broken crayons shaved between two layers of waxed paper and then mounted in between two pieces of construction paper with a cut out shape in the middle (well, there - that's the whole project in a nutshell). But the site was a jungle of pop-ups - the really annoying kind that move around and camouflage the close button. No matter how cool a project is, I just can't bear to pass on the aggravation.
Then, like an antidote, I stumbled onto a fabulous website with over 3,000 downloadable beautifully-illustrated alphabet cards, flash cards, coloring pages, murals - whimsical child-friendly art from a very generous artist who has provided this all to us for free.
Visit Jan Brett.
This is one reason why I recommend investing in a laminating machine. I splurged on one when I began homeschooling in 1990 and I still use it today. It will lengthen the lifespan of many of your mommying/teaching materials and you can laminate pictures and cartoons your family likes.
If the price is a stretch, go in with a few friends and share one. Or ask your mom for one for Christmas! Just please tell her to order it by linking through MommyLife!
And I really want to hear back how you like the Jan Brett site. There's some amazing stuff there - check out the manual alphabet (sign language).

We've been Jan Brett regulars since my daughter was in 1st grade and her teacher turned us on to the site. What a great teacher...they would listen to classical music during lunch time; all kinds of good mind-building rich music... i digress...

This is a *fabulous* site. I came across Jan Brett's work when I was looking for St. Patrick's Day colouring pages and crafts for my homeschool. I had completely forgotten about it since then. Thanks for reminding me to go back!

Thank you so much for the wonderful link. I look forward to getting more time to look through her site more. Freebies from the internet are how I gather the majority of my homeschooling materials. I received a laminator last year for Christmas and I cannot tell you how often I use it. Friends and family often joke saying that they have to be careful when they give something to me because I may laminate it. :)
Speaking of freebies, I thought I'd share one of my recent finds. Anyone doing, or planning to do, a unit/lesson on the days of creation, should check this link out, Creation Graphics. They are absolutely beautiful graphics depicting each day of creation. I printed them off and laminated them (of course). Anyway, I get so many comments about how beautiful they are, when people enter our homeschool room. I just love them and can't wait to look through the treasures you linked to.
Thanks again!

That is such a great site. I can't wait to start my daughter on the letter pages! And my son thinks the talking book feature is pretty cool too. Thanks!

The Jan Brett site is really lovely. My youngest who's nine thought the story was great ( he's autistic, maybe an average nine year old boy would feel too grown up for it ) and he raced through the alphabet game, got the hurray hedgehog certificate coloured it in and it's now on our mantlepiece.
Thanks for the link, we look forward to exploring more of it.
