Little Leaps Learning System

Note three days after this post: Please go here to read my second thoughts on this product. I had thought of deleting this entry entirely, but it did clarify some issues for me about product reviews, which I shared with my readers in the second post.

From time to time, companies contact me to try new products which they hope I'll recommend to my readers. My policy is to only recommend those that are truly worthwhile. Otherwise, you never hear about it. Also, since I've been a mother and teacher for a long time and have a lot of experience and a lot of my own recommendations to make, if a product review is the result of this kind of placement, I will tell you upfront.

Are y'all familiar with LeapFrog? I've been impressed with their offerings for a long time and have purchased their learning systems for my preschoolers. They are well-made and designed with a real understanding of children's developmental needs.

So when LeapFrog asked if I'd be interested in reviewing their newest venture - the Little Leaps Grow-with-Me Learning System, I looked forward to seeing what they'd cooked up for the diaper set (9 months to 3 years).

This is a learning system which hooks into your DVD player and has an activity controller which sits on baby's lap with chunky buttons for mom and baby to interact with what the puppetry, animation, and live-action they see on the TV screen. Through this directed play, baby is introduced to cause-and-effect, first words, matching, counting and numbers.

Not to mention togetherness with mommy (or daddy!).

I had fun with my kids trying this out. I found the animated characters to be delightful and age-appropriate. The lessons and learning songs were simple and child-friendly. The pace was enjoyable - not too slow or fast. I felt like the LeapFrog people had really done their homework on this one.

As your child approaches two, the controller can also be flipped over to reveal a more advanced design which allows toddlers more control and independence, while encouraging fine motor skills.

Another plus: the learning discs all offer a choice of four different languages.

The system retails for 39.99 and the learning discs are 17.99 each. However, it is a toy with a life span in a child's life of at least two years, and durable enough to last through several children.

You can order it at LeapFrog - or point indulgent grandparents in that direction.

Love,
