Opera for kids

This is a wonderful opportunity to expose your child (and yourself) to a little taste of opera. Since it's aimed at children, they will be hitting the highlights of the story and the most riveting music. And tickets are cheap!!

(For more on the importance of giving your kids the keys to culture, plus suggestions on how, plus Maddy's reaction to seeing Madama Butterfly, see Life Lessons from My Kids #1.)

Conducted by Plácido Domingo

Now in its third season, the Family Look-In provides a unique opportunity to introduce children to the magical world of opera and get a behind-the-scenes look at how an opera is put together. In this hour-long performance, Plácido Domingo leads members of the Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program in scenes from Puccini's memorable Madama Butterfly. They will be fully staged, costumed, and accompained by the full WNO Orchestra, just like the mainstage performances!

Tickets are $10 for youth ages 15 and under; $15 or $35 for adults.

For tickets, call Audience Services at 202.295.2400 or 800.US.OPERA or visit www.dc-opera.org for more information.

*Recommended for elementary school-aged children.

*Each order includes one study guide per ticket and one Madama Butterfly Commentary on CD per order.

Thanks to Anna for the tip!

Love,

Barbara,
You are making me miss living around DC. It is such a great place to expose your children to so much culture. Many years we went to the Messiah at the Kennedy Center in December. I am thrilled that my hubby is taking me this Saturday night to the Kansas City Symphony's performance of Messiah!!

What great timing this post is. Next month I'm taking my 12 year old to her first opera, The Barber of Seville. I cannot tell you how exctied I am because this will also be my first real opera* and even though I know I won't be able to get the image of Bugs Bunny slapping his ears on Elmer Fudd's head I know I'm never going to forget this experience. And, I hope, neither will Olivia.

* It's actually a second attempt. The first attempt was when my mom was dating a man who worked for the community theater. One time they put on an opera and he invited my mom and me to see it.

May I just mention now that Othello is *not* the best starter opera in the world? We had to leave during intermission because we had no clue what was going on. I was 9 then and I haven't been back until now.

Did I mention I'm excited about Barber of Seville?
*bouncing up and down in my seat*
