Suggestions needed for hymns on CD

Hi Barbara,

I'm an avid reader of your blog and have implemented many of your ideas! The most recent was teaching my two year olds to put on their own coats. It's great!

I, too, love hymns. I've poked around at cyberhymnal, but what I would really like is just a CD or two that I can play. Do you have any suggestions? I looked at your Picks, but didn't see any.

Renata

Hi Renata -

Our family favorite is Hymns Triumphant 1 & 2 which has many wonderful hymns sung by a grand chorus. You can hear a bit of each hymn at Amazon.

I'm hoping some readers have favorites to recommend too!

Love,

Fernando Ortega has a good, older CD with hymns. His is a lyrical, piano, folksy style: www.amazon.com/Hymns-Meditations-Fernando-Ortega

My wife and I have thoroughly enjoyed Susan Beisner's 4 CD set of piano-only renditions of 88 great hymns. Check out my review at

Deb - I just bought Tripp a Fernando Ortega CD last week and we listened to it while making Thanksgiving dinner. I like his style.

Thanks Evers for the piano-only suggestion.

Steve Sensenig's "Tis So Sweet"is an awesome piano-only CD that I would highly recommend.
Of course, I would, since he IS my husband.;)
You can listen to some of the tracks on his website:
www.worshipkeys.com.
He also has a Christmas CD available with some downloadable tracks at this site:

Hope this helps!

Selah has a hymn album which I LOVE. It's called Greatest Hymns. It has the standard Amazing Grace, but also less -recorded classics such as "Oh Sacred Head Now Wounded", "Be still My Soul", and "precious Lord, take my hand". A couple of songs pay tribute to 2 of the trios African roots (They grew up on the mission field). A must have!

I have three children under 5 and I've found the Hymns for a Kid's Heart collection to be a wonderful way for my children to learn hymns. I think that the music is very well done, especially for a children's CD. Reading the book that accompanies the CD has also been a wonderful addition to our family's study of the Word.

I also think that having learned the hymns through this CD, my children are excited (and not as intimidated) to sing along when they hear the hymns orchestrated on an even grander scale. As a matter of fact, while I was listening to samples from the CD that Barbara suggested, my 1 year old began to excitedly sing along with Holy, Holy, Holy. (That is her favorite hymn at the moment. A day does not go by without her requesting 15-20 times the singing of, "Hoey, Hoey") :)

Antrim Mennonite Choir - Amazing Grace
It is absolutely beautiful- accapella, therefore simple, and the notes (and parts) are easily heard. This is a favorite in my house (6 yr old, 3 yr old, & 2 yr old.)
(it's 54% off at this site: www.scrollpublishing.com)

You can also hear two songs from the cd at this same site, although the sound is deceivingly hollow. The actual cd sounds normal, rich, and full.

I'll second the Selah Greatest Hymns CD - I love it! And Amy Grant has one or two out that I really like too.

I second the suggestion on the Amazing Grace CD by the Antrim Mennonite Choir. It is truly beautiful. My Mennonite friends gave me a copy and I listen to it all the time. While not primarily hymns, my other all time spiritual favorites are written/performed by these awesome singer - songwriters:
