Toddlers CAN put on their own jackets

When I was a Montessori teacher, my assistant and I simply could not put on jackets for 25 preschoolers (if that seems like a high student/teacher ratio, that's because the Montessori method works so well and creates such independent learners that one teacher can have 25 preschoolers working in small groups or individually and just kind of float around to help whoever needs it. Ideally you reach the point where you can just sit and watch your class at work - and I've been blessed to experience that).

In my books, I've described the method we taught our children to put on their own jackets. In my next book I'll be able to use pictures, and a reader who read Small Beginnings many years ago has sent me these.

But Mommy, Teach Me won't be out until next summer. I didn't want you to have to wait another winter to equip your child to be more independent in this area. Remember, a child who has opportunities to channel his drive for independence in a positive direction - like dressing himself early on - will be a happier child.

My dear MIL (former preschool teacher) taught my older two to put on their coats this way as preschoolers.

My three year old son just learned this a few weeks ago in preschool. They call it the "Up and Over" and he is so proud of himself for being able to do it alone! I think that it's great.

Barbara,

I love Montessori! I have a question perhaps you can answer, I can't seem to find an answer on the internet. My three and a half year old wants to learn to tie his shoes. He has already "tied" them without my help (they stayed "tied" in knots for days!) But of course it is necessary for him to learn the appropriate way to tie. I am looking for the step by step method and instructions for teaching him by the Montessori method... Do you have those instructions? Or know where I can find them? Thanks so much!!
