With kids, a few words can make a big difference
Received this from a reader - a good reminder for us all!
Hi Barbara,Just had to let you know about something you suggested that's working WONDERS in our family. It's just a small phrase, but both my older girls are responding so well...."Let's see how ________ you can do it". Instead of saying, that's too loud, be careful, not so hard etc. I just say, "Let's see how gently you can do it or Let's see how quietly you can go upstairs and make your bed etc." They respond so well to it!! YEA! Thanks.
Angie
Try it and see if it works at your house!

Heh-heh-heh. What does it say about ColicBoy (3.5yrs) that when I tried this he said, "No, let's see how SLOWLY I can clean up!!" and "I can't. [do it quietly] I only can do it LOUDLY!"
That's my son right there. Do I win bad mother of the year award for FINALLY figuring out how to get him to clean up? Yes, I gave him a piggy bank and showed him how those rides at the mall cost quarters, and told him he'd earn one quarter per night for a good, obediant clean up. Well, ColicBoy earned 6 quarters in the first 7 days....
