Anyone else seen Rocky Balboa?

When a reader recommends something to me, I definitely want to check it out. This in from Linda:
Barbara,I wanted to bravely recommend Rocky Balboa, too. My husband really wanted us to see it. I was laughing on the way to see it and crying on the way home. Quite moving! It was an inspiring movie about manhood, and what it means to be made in the image of God for women, too. "Fighters fight!" I came away from it recharged to be an ambassador for Christ here on this earth. I came away from it ready to take a stand for my children and for my husband's work. The Lord has redeemed my exercise/strength training time, too...I pray and battle strongholds that have hindered the pro-life movement during this exercise time. A real fight! I know the movie will not affect all of us in the same way, but I wanted to tell you about it.
Love in Him,
Linda
This may sound strange to a lot of moms out there, but believe me, any mom with a bunch of sons will know what I'm talking about when I say that raising boys will definitely change even the most prissy of us. By the time my four-in-a-row boys were teens, I was willing to watch football, Samurai movies, and all kinds of masculine stuff. The year before he got married, Josh and I had a Sunday night ritual of watching The Contender together. I never thought I could watch boxing, but I really learned a lot.
Samantha (my oldest daughter) has four boys in a row also - followed by their only daughter so far - ages 7-14. They have always been soccer/baseball players but have recently gotten involved in wrestling, so Grandma and Grandpa will be watching wrestling matches soon.
All by way of saying that I've learned from experience to develop an interest in things I might have ignored before because they were too "masculine" and didn't make sense to me.
On Linda's recommendation, I will be sure to see Rocky Balboa - especially since Ben and Zach are home from school until January 20. I'll let you know what I think.
In the meantime, has anyone else seen it?

oh yes, we saw it the day it opened. My hubs was a Rocky look-alike when they were both younger (he is 6 years younger than Sylvester Stallone) and identified with many aspects of the original story and has always been a fan of the sport. He owns the whole box-set of Rocky #1-5 (VHS!). I remember as a senior in high school being captivated by the Time magazine cover of Stallone as Rocky. So, I guess something would have been wrong with us if we DIDN'T go : )
It's not a great movie, as movies go. The original Rocky movie was a charmer. There are many (too obvious) allusions to the original in this finale. Some great points about being a real man in this one, though, and Rocky continues to have good heart and be a great character. Thankfully, there is no pre-marital sex or junk like that in this movie.
Cinderella Man (Russell Crowe) is a fabulous movie, also, set during the Great Depression; features boxing but more than that, a man being a real man to his family and his nation at large.

oh, and Barbara, after you see Rocky Balboa, let's comment on the images that accompany the final credits ; ) That was one of the inspired parts of the movie to me.

I did not see it but I wanted to agree on boys changing you. My guys are now into legos. I can't stand the things but, because I love my boys, I play. Surprisingly, I am even now trying my own things instead of following all those directions.
I also wanted to mention that because of your question about the tv interview, I have since changed my dishes and bowls to a lower shelf and I LOVE it!! I had been meaning to do it "sometime" but you gave me the kick in the pants I needed. Now I am going to look at all your other ideas.
Thanks for being so wonderful!

One of my favorite people writes about God-talk in our culture - especially in movies and television. I am sure you don't need one more thing to read, but I think you'd really appreciate her post about Rocky here:

Many blessings in the new year! May Christ be magnified in all you do and who you are - as always!
In Christ alone,
Kari

Thank you Kari for the interview link! I am so excited to think that Stallone might be a real Christian, I SO LOVED his interview! Am passing it on to my hubs and children. What good news. PTL!
