Marin County - home of hypocrisy
Though I don't often get political on my blog, I must comment on this:
Crowd rips Habitat for Humanity Project.
As a former Marin County resident (22 years), I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I read this from the Marin Independent Journal (a very liberal paper I used to write conservative think-pieces for):
The proposed units would be the county's first Habitat homes. The organization closed its Marin affiliate in the late 1990s after failing to get sufficient community support to build Habitat houses in Marin. The property owner, Pan Pacific Ocean Inc., plans to divide the tract into seven parcels, building three market-rate single-family houses ranging in size from 6,244 square feet to 7,446 square feet on lots at the top of the sloping site.
The remaining .85 acres would be used by Habitat to build four three-bedroom houses of about 1,435 square feet, including a single-car garage. Each Habitat house would be priced for a family of four with an annual income of $56,000.
Habitat for Humanity San Francisco executive director Phillip Kilbridge addressed community concerns over long-term goals of its prospective homeowners.
"This is not a get-rich-quick scheme," he said. "These are for households truly dedicated in making a difference in the community. The exact reasons you are living there are the reasons why we want our families to live there. We can make this four-home unit work."
In Marin? Not in a million years!
Heaven forbid that four families not up to Marin County standards might enjoy the landscape, weather, and views of Marin! Four affordable family dwellings might drive down the value of the mini-mansions next door - though some who've already gotten their piece of the pie rail against increased traffic. From four homes? Give me a break.
So, you may be wondering - this is a reaction that could happen anywhere. Why is Barbara foaming at the mouth?
Because Marin County is the home of liberalism - you know, the Democrat agenda of taking care of the little guy. Barbara Boxer territory. The people who want to tell you how wrong you are to drive SUVs even while driving their own. The people who want to help poor people - but only with your tax dollars and not in their own backyard.
No big surprises - some years ago a church in Novato (the northernmost and most normal town in Marin) donated half an acre for Habitat for Humanity to build a single family home. They were quickly shut down and when I left Marin the lot still stood empty
Shame on Marin!!! Shame, shame, shame!!!
There has to be a special place in hell for hypocrites.
See why I don't write much about politics here? :)

You really should send this as an LTTE to all the county papers!

I personally like it when you talk politics! And I agree with "people who want to help poor people - but only with your tax dollars and not in their own backyard." Unfortunately that's a rampant attitude in our society today.

Shameful indeed!

Good for you for bringing this to national attention! It was on our local news.
The reporter asked a retired gentleman about his position. The man said, "We just think there are better places to build these homes."
The reporter, God bless him, asked, "Where?"
The retired man smiled vaguely. Looked up at the sky. Smiled again. Shook his head. Turned around, and left. An excellent piece of journalism by a newscast that usually winks at liberal hypocrisy.
