An icy paradise outside, keeping cozy with the kids

We waited a long time for a real snow this year in northern Virginia. It finally happened Wednesday. The kids came home from school two hours early. They've been home ever since.

It wasn't that there was a lot of snow - it was only a few inches. But then we had freezing rain and all the snow turned to solid ice so that the rolling Virginia countryside is coated over with three inches of ice like an ice skating rink - a sledding paradise.

I mentioned that I picked up five grandchildren Thursday morning, so I am hunkered down with 10 kids under 14 - plus Sophia who is 17 and prefers to stay in and make hot chocolate for the breaks when they all come in and shed their snow gear. At night all eleven curl up in sleeping bags and watch old westerns with Tripp/Dad/Grandpa.

Life is on hold. Snow gives everything a feeling that the world is standing still. My MOPS talk this morning was cancelled. Basketball practices and rehearsals have all been cancelled. Tomorrow Sophia, Maddy and I will venture out to the Closer Moms/Daughters conference in Silver Spring, MD. After registering, I thought to contact Susie Shellenberger, editor of Focus on the Family's Brio magazine (a wonderful resource for teen girls) and the girls and I will be doing a story on it.

Sunday night Kip and Samantha return. Monday is a school holiday. Tuesday life will grind back into normal gear. I am thinking of joining a gym to try to help my body catch up with my lost weight (still 75 pounds). But today, no worries, just a winter wonderland and our quickly dwindling wood supply.

Just when you think God is good, He does something even more wonderful than the day before!

Love,

Can you mention a list of the old westerns that your husband has enjoyed with the kids? :-)

Re: joining a gym. Dec. 1, 2006 I joined Contours Express, a "women only" gym. They are wonderful! My reason for joining was to increase my strength and endurance. So far, so good. If you google the name, their website comes up and a location finder is there. Looks like Virginia has a bunch...just don't know what's close to you. I really think you'll like what you see; and they are better than Curves. If you can, let us readers know what you decided! (I am 49 yrs. old, and if I had to guess, the average age at my gym in Northern California is about 40. They seem to cater to an older crowd....I like that!)
