Why I'm blogging on Sunday morning
Can you see how big those flakes are? Some of them look two inches across! And since I took that picture the visibility has decreased to less than a quarter mile - I can't even see those not-so-distant hills anymore.
Yesterday we were being bombarded with warnings of the dreaded "wintry mix" that paralyzed northern Virginia ten days ago, shutting down schools for three days - which with the Presidents' Day holiday gave the kids a six day vacation - the ice/rain/sleet combo that coated the rolling hills here with such a thick layer of hard ice that the surfaces everywhere were like an ice skating rink for days.
For two days it melted, but then the forecasts picked up the chant - and no one knew which proportions of the triple threat would prevail. But when we went to bed last night, the last word was snow in the morning, rain in the afternoon.
Doesn't look that way this morning at all. We're getting two inches per hour of soft thick snow and the temperatures aren't supposed to go above 32.
Church was cancelled, the kids' rehearsals were cancelled, and Maddy's singing competition was cancelled. Our grownup kids and grandkids are snowbound on the other side of the mountain so our Sunday Taco dinner is cancelled as well.
I wish they could be here with us to enjoy the snow together. Still, we waited a long time for our Winter Wonderland this year, so we're all thanking God it didn't pass us by.

ah...we were in a "blowing snow advisory" with blizzard-like conditions just to the west and north of us. Once again, the bubble that is Manhattan, KS got a dusting - the sun came out and melted it this a.m., even though it's still chilly out.
Enjoy whatever you can today!
