Butterfly Garden

Have you flung open your windows yet? Mine are all abreeze and I've noticed that everyone's spirits have picked up too! I love winter and snow, but always find I'm ready for spring!

Just want to share a way we've celebrated spring: A Butterfly Garden which allows kids the kind of early concrete experience that will help them understand and appreciate the world around them.

I've added the Butterfly Garden at Early Education under Barbara's Picks because this is how you begin a science program with your children - which I will have more to say about in Mommy, Teach Me!

Give your child a hands-on experience with the miracle of metamorphosis! This kit comes with a mail-in certificate for live caterpillars. Once they arrive in your mailbox, you can put them in their new home and wait for them to spin their cocoons, then emerge as beautiful Painted Lady butterflies. Kit comes with food to nurture the butterflies until they are strong enough to let go.

I got this one because it collapses for storage and we used it year after year (and because we had more money available then :) but Amazon has other less-expensive models available too - just link in through this one and search for more.

Enjoy spring! Help your children take in and appreciate everything that is happening all around them!

Love,

Butterfly gardens are such a joy! My mother did a butterfly garden with my sister and I when we were young and it was so much fun :-)

I highly recommend this! This is absolutely one of the most awesome thing I have ever watched. We've done this every year for the past 3 years and it never gets old to me. Right before the butterfly comes out the chrysalis turns a clear color and you can see the black and orange of the butterfly wings inside. It's really amazing to watch. God is so awesome.
