Free Bible for a mom who's never read one!

I had five children before I ever read the Bible.

Like many intellectual/cultural elites, I'd accepted the prevailing wisdom that Christianity was not worth investigating. That Christians were narrow-minded and stupid. That the Bible was a musty old book full of meaningless and misleading - not to mention boring - stuff.

I preferred existentialism, Hinduism - anything esoteric (my B. A. is in philosophy and I was a longtime New Age practicioner). If you'd challenged my open-mindedness, I'd have laid you low with my logic.

And yet there was one thing my mind remained completely shut on: Chrisianity.

"There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance - that principle is contempt prior to investigation."
Herbert Spencer

So glad I got over that hurdle!! Though it took a leap of faith and a commitment to Christ (not a church and not a group of people, but Jesus himself) to actually see my own narrow-mindedness.

I can't tell you how grateful I am for God's written word. It has helped me through so many difficult places - with my kids, my marriage, worldly troubles and my own character.

There is just so much wisdom in that book - helpful stuff that uplifts and sustains me - quite the opposite of Hegel, Nietszche, and Sartre. :)

Anyway, I'm thinking about that this morning and thanking God for helping me become a better parent through understanding his plan (I always tell my kids that the Bible is like the Owner's Manual that comes with your car) - and I have a brand new Bible sitting on my desk which Zondervan sent me to review.

It's called the Mom's Devotional Bible and here's what I wrote when I listed it under Barbara's Picks:

Too busy for a Bible study? Any mom can start a no-pressure devotional life with this NIV (New International Version - a more modern translation than King James) Bible, sprinkled with devotions by Elisa Morgan, founder of MOPS. "In these thought-provoking devotions ...you'll see how clearly the Bible speaks to the big and not-so-big issues only mothers understand- and how it faithfully provides inspiration and wisdom to help you not only cope but truly enjoy being a Mom."

Now, I'd like to know:

Is there a mom out there like me (well, like I used to be) who's never read the Bible?

If so, and if you're willing to put aside any prejudices you might have and really read this Bible, I'd like to send it to you.

The only qualification is that you don't own a Bible yourself. First response takes the prize!

Love,

Alicia -

Please email me your address (click on the bar at the top for my email) and I will send it to you.

Hope you enjoy it! When I first saw a Bible I didn't know anything about it - Old Testament/New Testament kings, chronicles, gospels - whatever. I was encouraged to read the book of John (fourth chapter in the New Testament) fist, so I did. I would recommend the same.

Proverbs is very good common sense stuff.

And there's a section in the back of this Bible where you can look up things like sibling rivalry, loneliness, grudges and more to find places in the Bible to look for help.
Maybe other readers have ideas too.
