Postage rates increasing 5/14
Just received this from the folks at PaperbackSwap:
USPS will raise the postal rates on May 14, 2007, so if you have books you have been hoarding, post them and send them out now! The new Media Mail rate for a package under 1 lb (typical paperback) will be $2.13. The rate for a package between 1 and 2 lbs (typical hardcover) will be $2.47. That's a hike in price, true, but it's still a bargain. They've been losing money on Media Mail rate for a long time, so although it is painful, we understand. USPS is really amazing - their rate of package loss is really tiny, and they handle a mind-boggling amount of items every day.
I agree. I have no complaints about the USPS - they do a great job considering how much mail they handle
(Though I am old enough to remember when stamps were only 3 cents. Sometimes I wonder why they offer all these different kinds of stamps. It seems like they could keep the cost down if we just had plain old stamps. . . .)
Anyway - this is a good reason to hurry up and buy any books on your wish list. I will have to raise the price on my own books next Monday since shipping is included.
Also, my sister-in-law just wrote to say she is getting a bunch of copies of The Dangerous Book for Boys to put in her present closet for birthday parties. What a great idea! Imagine giving a boy something that will help him discover himself!

Is there a way for us to see what books you have posted on PbS?

Barbara,
I thought of you last night when I was at my Toastmaster's meeting and one of the speakers talked about stamp collecting. He has had this hobby for 75 years! He explained to us that all the new stamps that come out, about 30 each year, are a HUGE money maker for the postal service. He told us that there are literally millions of stamp collectors world-wide who frequent the post office just to purchase the new stamps and when they do, they buy lots of them. I never would have known that and it did answer questions I had after reading your blog entry. However, it made me have another question...if they are making all that money on the new stamps, why do we non-stamp collector persons still have the burden of the stamp price increase? Inquiring minds want to know....
