    The Little Red Hen
Hooray for a good work ethic! The little red hen asks but receives no help in her efforts to put bread on the table. Yet all who wouldn't help would like to eat. In a refreshingly old-fashioned triumph of moral consequences, they don't get to!
  • Noisy Nora
    Noisy Nora
Poor Nora! The loveable mousette experiences all the pangs of the child-in-the- middle, caught between the demands of baby brother and bossiness of big sister. Catchy meter, playful illustrations make for a wonderfully satisfying mouse's tale. Baby-Preschool

My Waterford Boys

I've told you about Waterford, the little village a mile down the road from us. It's a historic monument and so one of the rites of passage of Loudoun County elementary school kids is a trip to Waterford dressed in traditional-looking clothing for a morning in the one room schoolhouse.

Each one also brings an old fashioned lunch - no paper or plastic bags or anything anachronistic. My boys brought hard boiled eggs, an apple, cookies and bread wrapped in pieces of cloth, all bundled into a dish towel.

Jesse and Daniel were very excited when they left for their Waterford School experience Friday morning. For those of you new to this site, both of these sons (my 10th and 11th children) have Down syndrome and were adopted (see A Tale of Four Adoptions). Jesse is Iranian/Mexican and Daniel is a regular American mix with a lot of Irish. Jesse had his 12th birthday May 28 (two days after mine), and Daniel his 11th on May 12th. They are 50 weeks apart in age. But I suppose God knew what he was doing :)

Because of the proximity of our birthdays, Jesse and I always share a cake. This year he would not let me near the candles!

Jesse was born two days after my 47th birthday. Daniel was born the next year on Mother's Day. May is more special to me because God has given me two special gifts to help me remember his presence in every aspect of my life!

May is a busy month for me as well. I have a son who turned 17 on the 12th, a daughter who turned 16 on the 13th, and a grandson who was born on my birthday May 16th.

I love your smile in the last photo. :)

Sounds like a lovely trip and a blast for your two sons. I'll have to ask my homeschool students in Virginia if they've ever been to Waterford!

That looks like so much fun! Their outfits and lunch "bags" are cute. Happy birthday to the two of you as well!
