A Summary of the World
If we could shrink the Earth's population to a village of precisely I00 people and with all existing human ratios remaining the same, it would look like this:
There would be 57 Asians, 21 Europeans, 14 from the Western Hemisphere (North and South), and 8 Africans.
51 would be female, 49 would be male.
70 would he non-white, 30 would be white.
70 would be non-Christian, 30 would be Christian.
50% of the entire world's wealth would be in the hands of only 6 people and all 6 would be citizens of the United States.
80 would live in substandard housing.
70 would be unable to read.
50 would suffer from malnutrition.
1 would be near death, 1 would be near birth.
Only 1 would have a college education.

As an American, I am as guilty as anyone else of taking stuff for granted - even such simple things as turning on a switch and having light. As a Christian, I pray that God will continue to remind me that I should be giving beyond my comfort level. There is so much need in the world. God bless all of you who are adopting children and pushing the envelope to love in the way Christ taught us.

Somehow the one about 70 not being able to read strikes me the hardest-- maybe because I feel like it's one I have the power as an individual to change.
Reading is such a huge part of my life, and-- if Jim Tralease can be believed-- such a key to changing a number of other negative things on that list.
Right now I'm focusing on my children (continually reminding myself of the appropriateness of my limited assignment) but I'm thinking more and more that my "later-stages" ministry may be in the area of literacy.

That sure puts life in perspective! We are so blessed to live in the United States, to be educated and have the freedom to pursue our dreams while so many are simply pursuing their next meal!
I believe God gives wealth and power to those he trusts will use them for the good of others.
Thanks for the reminder,
Elizabeth
