Thanksgiving - another holiday lost to PC panic?

I was really dismayed to receive a notice from one of my kids' teachers about her classroom's annual "Harvest celebration" November 16. We were invited to sign up to contribute turkey. cranberries, green beans, etc.

I wrote back:

Are we not allowed to call it Thanksgiving anymore?

I really don't think we need to do away with that tradition. You don't need to be religious to give thanks - it's good for atheists too :)

And it's part of American history which our children are entitled to learn.

I scribbled that on the notice this morning, but I feel a full-blown article coming on. Thanksgiving is an official national holiday - established by Abraham Lincoln in 1864.

I am just sick to observe even further fallout from the PC police who work tirelessly to stir up fear about introducing patriotic or traditional spiritual material in the classroom (unless it's Islam).

It is actually illegal to ban such material - and so wrong that teachers have become this confused.

Love,

Along the same lines.......At the bottom of the front page of a large grocery store chain's weekly sales flyer here in the south (I'm in NC), "Happy Diwali, (di-va-li) (festival of lights), 11/9/07; Diwali is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in India. Diwali signifies victory of good over evil and is celebrated with colored lights, food, and lots of fun."
Am I wrong, or does this 'taste' of taking away from our Christian holidays? Don't misunderstand, I can see how people from other countries will celebrate the same holidays from their country of origin if they move to the US. But for a large grocery chain to include this in their weekly sales flyer? Since we're Americans, in America, shouldn't we promote American holidays and traditions?

Thanks, Barbara - I will be looking forward to reading your article. Many of us think the same way you do about Thanksgiving. It's becoming an overlooked/pc correct holiday - people are being "pushed" into Halloween - which is no holiday at all, in my humble opinion!

Funny, I went to a harvest party on October 31st...

I've wondered for a long time how one can "give thanks," though, without knowing or caring to whom one is giving thanks.

I'm curious to know if you ever got a response back regarding the "Harvest Celebration."

Thanks!
