Montessori at home - create a book nook
It always makes me feel wonderful to know that the ideas in my books have helped families.
In Mommy, Teach Me to Read! I encourage moms to create a book nook for their children:
Make your child’s solo reading extra special by creating a reading nook. It doesn’t require much area – after all a child isn’t very big! – a cozy chair or maybe just a large comfy pillow on the floor next to a sunny window. Decorate with some small pictures hung at his level. Place an inexpensive bookcase (or cover sturdy boxes with contact paper to make your own) to hold his own books.
I was so excited to see the nook Angela created - you can see it too at her blog Little Miracles.
Love the picture she chose too!
Mommy, Teach Me to Read! continues:
Begin early to teach your child how to handle books with respect. (If you grew up in a home where books were used for coasters, you might want to rethink this now that you’re paying for them yourself!) When you read with your child, exaggerate the care with which you turn the pages. Teach your child when he is finished reading a book to place it upright on the shelf with the binding facing out.
It's not just a book about teaching reading, but about encouraging your child to have a lifelong love of books. Thanks, Angela for sharing - this made my day!

A good friend created a book nook from an old plastic wading pool. She filled it with pillows and stuffed animals and put it by a bookcase. Every child that I have seen visit her home has spent some time curled up in that old pool looking often "reading" to the stuffed animals. We just keep a stack of board books by the potty.
