Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
In The Mommy Manual, I suggest choosing a hymn that becomes your family signature. The one you sing at the close of every family worship. The one your children will use at their weddings.
This is ours:
Come, Thou Fount of Every BlessingCome, Thou Fount of every blessing,
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it,
Mount of Thy redeeming love.Here I raise my Ebenezer;
Here by Thy great help I’ve come;
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed His precious blood.O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be!
Let Thy goodness, like a fetter,
Bind my wandering heart to Thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for Thy courts above.
Here are three vastly different interpretations:
Traditional with awesome choir and orchestra:
Rock with Dave Crowder Band:
Beautifully simple, thoughtful Sufjan Stevens (my kids turned me onto him). This video is inexplicably backed by African animal scenes, but I wanted you to hear S ufjan's version:
What's funny is that we chose our hymn in 1990, long before anyone - that I know of - gave it a different kind of spin. And way long before YouTube.
If you have a favorite family hymn, check it out at YouTube to see what you come up with.

Wow! We have the same hymn! I always sing that to my children at bedtime so they all know the words. I especially love the third verse.

Barbara - thanks for these wonderful videos. The first one brought tears to my eyes. That's my vision of what heaven will be like.

I viewed this hymn on You Tube at the beginning of the year and it moved me to tears. Beautiful.
