Dreams

russian-dolls-4_jpg.jpg

My dreams last night were like a set of Russian nesting dolls. Have you ever dreamed you were dreaming?

I dreamed all night about somehow getting out of my cast. Remember how this week Tripp trimmed 1/2 inch around each of the edges - my arm, my hand, my thumb? The sharp edges of the fiberglass had been cutting into my skin and hurting. It was such a relief to have a little more freedom of movement with my right hand.

Then yesterday I started thinking of all the things coming up in my life - Maddy and I are going to Virginia Tech next weekend for her singing competition - and I wondered if I could persuade the doctor to take off the cast early. But would that be a good idea?

So last night I tossed and turned, dreaming of Tripp cutting straight down the cast with the floral scissors he'd used to trim it before. I dreamed of me cutting it off and taking a shower, then putting it back together with rubber bands but finding my arm was not healed. i dreamed again of Tripp cutting me out of it, then waking up to find that my arm had slid out of it while I was asleep and I was completely free. But then I woke up and my arm was still firmly encased in blue fiberglass.

Do you remember your dreams? I don't very often.

Have you had recurring dreams? I have several:

*flying like a bird - a lovely sensation.

*airports

*suddenly discovering new rooms in my house

*finding myself without adequate clothing in public - I've looked this one up and think it has to do with my openness about my life - not hiding behind anything.

*coming up on final exams and realizing I've never gone to the class. This is a common dream, I hear. But my latest variation is that I have to teach a class and am not prepared, or that I'm coming up to opening night and don't know my lines.

I do believe that dreams are purposeful even though they are random. I think they are a way for us to face our fears and insecurities.

But I've never had the experience I had last night - the dream within a dream and the endless theme of getting out of this cast. Two weeks to go. . . .

Do any of you have the same recurring dreams as I do - or anything else interesting?

Love,

I have had lots of different recurring dreams. In high school I used to often dream that I was Superman -- but had lost most of my powers. I had to rescue Lois Lane and try to hide my diminished power from the bad guys. I still remember the frustration of trying to fly and only being able to get a few feet off the ground.

Shortly after getting married I started having dreams that I was being made to return to high school. In my dreams I always had graduated and gone to college, but for some reason had to go back to high school. Usually I would skip all of my classes, and often I would have to go to the principle to get a copy of my schedule since I hadn't been to my classes in so long that I had actually forgotten where they were. (In these dreams it doesn't matter what grade I get or if I haven't studied for the test, because I have already graduated. Well, it makes sense in the dream!)

Intertwined with that dream I often dreamt that my husband was "missing." Instead of my actual husband I would dream that I was married to my old high school boyfriend -- only I hadn't actually seen or spoken to him since high school. I would search everywhere for his phone number, try to remember where his parents lived. It wasn't like he'd left me, we'd just lost touch somehow and I needed to know if he still wanted to be my husband. Sometimes I was hoping he'd say no so I could marry my actual husband. Very odd, I know.

These days I often dream that I can't find a bathroom anywhere. The only ones I can find require squeezing through very small spaces or are completely open to anyone walking by. (Usually I wake up needing to go!)

I do often have dreams where I "wake up" over and over. I've had those dreams since I was little. In elementary school I would sometimes get up to get ready for school, lay on my mom's bed "for just a second," and then fall asleep and dream that I was up and getting dressed. I would actually be surprised when my mom woke me and I was still in my PJs!

Oh, I almost forgot -- I also dream of discovering new rooms in my house! Usually the context is that one of my grandparents is giving me their house, and the more I walk through it the more I find large, beautiful rooms that I had never noticed before. So I end up with this huge, wonderful, beautifully decorated house (for free!)

Wow - it is so interesting to me that your recurring dreams are GOOD! I only have recurring nightmares. What fun ones you have, flying and discovering new rooms:)

I dream about not knowing my lines for a play or musical quite often. I also dream about going back to school and not knowing where my classes are or not being prepared for an exam.

Every time I'm pregnant I dream that I've given birth to something that is not human but no one in the delivery room is at all surprised or upset. For example, when pregnant with Baby #3 I dreamed that I gave birth to a piece of macaroni the size of a newborn baby. Everyone oohed and aahed over how cute it was but I was quite perplexed. I'm pregnant with Baby #4 right now and am awaiting what kind of strange thing I'll give birth to in my dreams. Pregnancy hormones are some powerful things!

I used to dream a lot about weird staircases that didn't go anywhere or doors that were too small to fit through. My flying dreams are almost always about running a foot or so above the ground. I've had the dreams of being in public without enough clothing and of being unprepared to speak or take an exam.

Blessings,

Sandy

I dreamed over and over last night that the power went out. The power often goes out here as we are rural, but it didn't last night. I think I know what it means, I do believe dreams have meanings.
