My life - and diet update

This cast is driving me crazy!!!!!

Still dreaming of getting out of it. . . . .

Yesterday I was able to use a pair of gigantic toenail snippers to trim down another ½” on my thumb where the edge of the fiberglass was rubbing my skin raw.

The fiberglass - while lighter and easier to live with in many ways than the old plaster casts – is rife with sharp edges and chafes the skin, snags clothing and hurts little children who brush against it.

When I start to get cranky, I just remind myself it could be worse. That’s how I always approach self-pity.

In other news, I have decided to get serious about finishing my diet. While I lost 90 pounds in a year – and only had 12 to go to my target weight, I did put on 12 pounds over the holidays. So my net loss since January 1 had been 78 with 24 more to go. Did you get that math? Oh, and if you're new here and want to hear about my weight loss journey - how and why I did it and and what I learned - scroll to the bottom and read my entires here.

It’s not that I hadn’t tried in the past couple months. But I was trying and failing, still not able to get into the 10 Ps in my closet I had bought when my 12s were getting a little too big before Thanksgiving (I discovered after losing weight that petites really fit me better – I so like the way that sounds!)

So Monday I went on a 2-ay fast, using Fat Flush method, but without the six day prep because all my previous attempts at the prepping were not succeeding. I needed to break my connection with food again and make a fresh start.

Each day I made the special drink:

8 cups water
1 cup cranberry juice
juice of one lemon
juice of one orange
1 t. cinnamon
½ t. nutmeg
¼ t. ginger

Simmer 20 minutes

Then I drank a cup of that every other hour and at least one big glass of water every other hour.

This worked for me. Yesterday I was able to stick to the Fat Flush plan with no problem. When I diet like this, I do not use recipes or make good food for myself. I just eat a couple hard boiled eggs or open a can of packed-in-water tuna. I eat to survive. I do not eat for pleasure. I know a lot of people on diets recommend being kind to yourself by eating tasty meals. To me, dieting is a renunciation of my attachment to food and sense of entitlement. I am breaking the attachment. I am allowing myself to be set free from even thinking about food.

This is what works for me – adding the spiritual component of NOT putting myself and my desires first.

So I’m down 7 pounds, which means 17 to go.

This kind of jumpstart is very motivating for me and will probably keep me on the straight-and-narrow over the weekend – which would have been challenging if I were still just making half-hearted attempts to get back on track.

Maddy and I are leaving for Virginia Tech for the NATS competition in a few hours. We’ll be there until Sturday and will see Ben – he’s competing also – and his girlfriend and very-dear-to-all-our-family Anna.

Hopefully I’ll come back minus some more pounds and a couple days closer to getting rid of this cast.

Will check in from the road.

Love,

Barbara,

I don't know how to just email you, as this may not be "comment worthy"! Regarding the irritation of the cast...

When my son was in a fiberglass cast, the doctor noted the roughness of it, and advised us to "wrap" it with Co-Ban tape... that's a stretchy, rubbery, Ace-bandage type tape that only sticks to itself - not to the cast or to other objects. Further, he advised that Co-Ban tape (for people) is kind of expensive, but we got it at the Farmer's Coop, sold as "Vet Wrap" (the exact same stuff) in lots of bright colors and much cheaper!

So, I let my kiddo pick three or four colors and we went home and wrapped the cast. The Co-Ban/Vet Wrap gets worn and fuzzy every few days and has to be cut off and the cast re-wrapped, but it was fun for him to be able to change his color when he wanted, AND (more importantly) it covered all the roughness.

We keep that tape on hand all the time. It only sticks to itself, so is useful (with guaze) for bandaging "owies" that a regular bandaid would stick to.

Hope that helps,

Julie

Barbara, can you wrap an ACE bandage around the cast?

To me, dieting is a renunciation of my attachment to food and sense of entitlement.

That's a profound statement! I like!

When I start to get cranky, I just remind myself it could be worse.

We must be cut from the same cloth. On bad days I repeat my cheering up mantra over and over again:
"At least I'm not Amish. I don't have to make my own soap."

It gets me through. :)

To Milehimama:
That's a fantastic quote!! ("At least I'm not Amish. I don't have to make my own soap.") :) I just had to say thanks for making me smile!!!

Hi Barbara!
You have done such a great job with your weightloss!! Wow! Congratulations! I use a website called PEERtrainer and I highly recommend it! It's a place where you can log your daily food & exercise and get support from others - in 4-person groups or larger teams. I find it crucial for helping me stay on track because it helps hold me accountable. You can join anonymously and (the best part...) it's free! I realize this sounds like an advertisement, but I really love this website, and I recommend it to everyone! Check it out!
(Suddenly I'm worried that I already told you about this website in a previous comment. If so, I apologize for the double recommendation!)
