I call my 7 yo Diddle-do or Diddle-bug. We call our 11 yo our "Little Sweetie", and sometimes, we call our 14 yo "Bulldog Boy" when he bugs us to death (he's quite the persistent guy when he wants something!). I use Darlin' and Sweetheart a lot, too. ;)

We have a whole series of nicknames for our daughter.

It includes:

Daisy Maisey

Dazes Mazes

Chudabudda

and

The Chud

Honey. With 4 girls in a row it prevents me from going, "Be- Em-, no Jul, wait, Lauren stop that!" LOL

Posted by: Amy | February 6, 2008 8:26 PM

I call them Boo or boo-boo alot, and then each one has a special nickname. My oldest is Lulu but now that he is almost 13 I don't call him that much anymore. ;) Next is Doodlebug, then Noodle and Monkey.

~Leslie

I use pumpkin and peanut butter a lot. The 3 year old says I should call the baby jelly (PBJ), but I mostly call him Schwab. (don't ask :) ) Oh, and babyman.

Sweetheart is big around here as well.

Posted by: gwen | February 6, 2008 8:50 PM

I have a daughter Kayla that I usually call K.KK or Sweet Pea and my son Carter we usually call either C (I know my nicknames aren't all that creative!) or buddy (which is what is sister calls him)

My son is Bubba and baby girl is Sissy. Yes we live in the south and I don't know how they ended up with those and I'm sure they're going to stick! My kids are gonna HATE me when they grow up. I need to start setting aside money for therapy now.

I also call him peanut (that's what we called him when I was pregnant and didn't know what he was), her peanut butter, and they call me jelly.

Posted by: Alison | February 6, 2008 10:38 PM

My girl was/is: Sugar, Sister, Baby, Princess Pearl and Miss

My son is: Little Man, Super Duper Pooper and The Chunk

My name as a little girl: Turkey Head.

Posted by: Imajackson | February 6, 2008 10:50 PM

i call mine sweets, sug (like sugar), shuggy boogie (can't quite get the spelling right on that one, but they rhyme!), pookie joe, punkin' head, punkin' bug, toots (rhymes with boots), honey bunny, really any crazy rhyme i can come up with. we have 6 and the youngest, katie (3), somehow ended up as pookie joe.

we joke about how all the nicknames for the kids are sugary/sweet and rot your teeth. then we joked about calling them 'healthy' nicknames like broccoli buns and carrot cheeks. they didn't quite stick!

Posted by: deborah | February 6, 2008 10:51 PM

I love this!!
I usually say "darling" "lovey" "my love" "sweetie" i love doing that!!

Posted by: Andrea Birch | February 6, 2008 11:04 PM

I always hated being called by my sisters' and the dog's names while a girl, so I've always called our eight any silly name that pops out of my mouth. Sometimes I try for outrageous just to make them laugh and run tell each other what they just got called, you know, "Noodle Puppy Toes" or "Strawberry Squash Pie" or whatever :-).

Posted by: Kimberly | February 6, 2008 11:35 PM

Love bug

bug

Buckaboo

Bucky

Baby bug

Posted by: Michelle | February 6, 2008 11:39 PM

Depending on the circumstances--Cuddle Bunny, Angel Pudding, My Sweet, and Shmooshie-kins.

Posted by: Donna | February 6, 2008 11:40 PM

Oh, I've used lots of them, but here are a few used on all five of my kiddos.

Sugar
Sweetie
Sweetie Buns
Sweetie Pie
You are a darling (when a good deed was done)
I liked to add an "ie" on the end of their names.
Punkin
Punkin Pie

Do you see a trend here?
This was fun.

Oh....I learned of a wonderful song after my kids were mostly grown up, but I still sing it to them on and off -- The Cuppycake Song. Check it out on YouTube.

Two teenagers nicknamed my first child "Sweetpea" while she was in my womb. They said, "We have to call it something other than 'It.'" And so, it began.....

Their in-utero names were:
First born-girl-Sweetpea;
Second born-boy-Dumpling;
Third born-girl-Doodlebug.

These have carried over. We also shorten their given names and use all of the cute things mentioned here: Honey, Punkin-Doodle, etc.

Now that son, 11yrs., is taking on a little masculinity, I rarely call him Dumpling anymore. Sometimes--Boy (with a tone of admiration about it)as a way of encouraging his masculinity and all of its qualities.

My third born, now 8 1/2 yrs., turns into such an efficent helper in the kitchen and can do such surprising things for her age.....we call her "Betty", as in Betty Crocker when she is in the kitchen or walking around the house in her apron looking to be helpful. She loves this and it makes her want to be even more helpful.

oh lordy, they might get mad but here goes.
i love teddy bears, always have so we have holly-bear, zoë-bear, abby-bear, jodie-bear and daniel was my little lion cub.
but lately it is
holly-bear or baby girl which is really strange considering she is 21 and soon to be a mommy
zo-zo
abbigator
jodie gracious
and
danny-boy (followed by mommy bursting into song singing Danny Boy of course)
the grandy-baby to be is currently lovingly referred to as the grandspawn and also as the inner craving because darling daughter #1 is hungry and eating all the time nowadays.

Posted by: laura | February 7, 2008 1:04 AM

It depends. If we're playing I call them 'booger' LOL I also call them 'my love' and they each have a special nickname.

Posted by: Sandy | February 7, 2008 7:06 AM

We are crazy for nicknames around here. Some of ours are Butch, Benjer, Bud, Lulu, Lulie-belle, Lou, Zackie-man, Stinky-poo, Icky-man, dooby, doobers, Fluffy, Baby-girl, Maresie-doats, Mares, dolly, dolly-face, sweetie, sweetie-babe, lovey-doll, honeybaby, loverbaby. My hubby and I even have nicknames for each other. I never call him his real name. He goes by Ralph to me. He calls me Vern or Frieda. Or we say any number of other mushy gushy names to each other.

In spite of all this, when I'm really serious about getting one of my children's attention I still run through the whole gamut 'Benj, Leah, Isaac...I mean Mary!!!'

Posted by: Beckie | February 7, 2008 8:05 AM

We have several nicknames we love to bestow on our children.

Gutter snipe,

Sassafras,

Little Bit,

Grumpy Pants,

Snuggle Bug,

Sug,

Dollbaby

Ms. Moody,

Academy Award Winner, (usually for best drama)

And our newest addition usually is given "Wild Thing"

I call my daughter, Emily, Sweet Girl. I've done it for so long that sometimes she calls my husband and I Sweet Daddy or Sweet Mommy. It's the sweetest!!

Posted by: Joani | February 7, 2008 9:36 AM

I call them "my sweet babou:....even my 21 year old son!

Posted by: thatmom | February 7, 2008 11:49 AM

Such sweetness! We have many! Remember this key-Do Not use those terms to refer to others, lest you minimize the love they carry. :) When our mom used to call us honey--right after calling a complete stranger honey, it left us feeling rather sick as we realized it wasn't OUR sweet name. But the sweet names only for us were special.

Posted by: Angela | February 7, 2008 11:54 AM

My nicknames of choice seem to be variations on pie:

Sugar-Pie
Sweetie-Pie
Cutie-Pie

This has worked well except my oldest recently asked "Which one of us is which?"

My husband and I also use short versions of their real names with a unique ending (oldest daughter ends with Boo, middle with Roo, youngest with Lou)

Sugar (or "sug"), Sweet Pea, and Baby are also frequently heard around here. All our daughters' names start with the same letter so nicknames serve us well. :)

Posted by: Karen | February 7, 2008 12:24 PM

I call mine, sweetie, punkin, darlin, sweetie pie.

Posted by: Debbie J. | February 7, 2008 2:03 PM

I call my daughter (9) Boo-Boo and my son (5) Big Guy or Little Man. They both get called Sweet Potato. I don't know how that one started, but it is my favorite.

Posted by: Elizabeth | February 7, 2008 2:48 PM

I never really use nicknames with my first 2 besides the occasional Honey, Little Guy or other generic love-names.
My 3rd I call Precious. And the baby is Peanut.

Posted by: Dawn | February 7, 2008 6:08 PM

Darlin', Snickerpoos and Caccalockoseek (don't ask).

Posted by: poetmeister4poets | February 7, 2008 11:40 PM

Before each of our children were born, I referred to them as "Punkin". Then my generic nickname for all babies in diapers is "Poopsie". (My oldest, when he was about three and overcoming a significant speech disorder, once asked me seriously, "Mama, please don't tell people you used to call me Poopsie. It sounds so...'sgusting!" Up until that time, that was about the longest sentences he'd said, so this must have been a big issue to him!

Most of our other children have had various and sundry nicknames that were either given to them by extended family, given to them by us based on something they did/said, or made up as a play on their namesl.

One of the fun things about having a larger family is that younger siblings either come up with odd pronunciations of names that then turn into nicknames that stick, or they come up with their own versions of siblings' nicknames. That's how we've ended up with a nickname based on a nickname based on a nickname that now sounds like "Me-Mice".

The other odd thing about larger families is that we really did sometimes refer to our children by number. It started out as a joke when we would do a "sound off" whenever we were in the car and each child had to count off, with the eldest shouting "One!", etc. We know another family that did this a great deal of the time and would even joke that they weren't going to bother naming the baby, but would just refer to him/her as "Number 8".

Of course, I also use "Honey" a lot. And babies were often "Baby" until they protested at being called that, or until the next baby came along. And sometimes I'll just invent some odd nickname that I'll use briefly, like "Schnuddlefinkmeier".

Posted by: Rebecca Prewett | February 8, 2008 11:25 AM

There are so many of these in our house I probably couldn't fit them all on a page.

Mostly, we call them baby, doll, babydoll, buddy, honey, sweetheart or beautiful, but they each have their own little nicknames, too. I actually worry that the baby may not know his own name because he's called by the nickname his 3 year old brother gave him so much. :-)

Posted by: Michelle | February 8, 2008 4:44 PM

my daughter is "my love" (my "little love" to be specific)
my husband being my "big love" of course

Posted by: bridget adams | February 9, 2008 3:05 PM

My dad started calling my little brother "budda" I'm not sure why. Maybe Bubba evolved some how. My dad even went so far as to write "Budda" on the peanut butter my brother uses. It could come from his liking peanut butter.
Dad also calls him bubber, again some what like bubba.
I don't have any nicknames and I consider myself lucky.

Posted by: TessErin | October 4, 2008 3:46 AM

My oldest is Riley, and we call him "riley-roo" or just "roo". All my kiddos are "Bears"...Riley bear, Preston Bear, and Daisy Bear!
