Keeping bananas - great tip

A couple weeks ago I blogged some household tips from Tripp's Aunt Mary Jane. One of them stood out for me:

-Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster.

I am very, very happy to report that my own kitchen research has proven that this works. It really, truly does - and I am looking forward to a brighter future with no black bananas :)

Bananas bought yellow from the store, separated upon arriving home and sitting on the counter for six days:

Certainly not as picturesque as a bunch - but definitely less frustrating than throwing out black bananas or making banana bread.

And, my goodness, sometimes this blog and what's on my mind seems so - as Sophia and Maddy would say - RANDOM.
I know, this

I'll try that! Of course, with my kids putting away the groceries these days, I'm always having to pull the bananas out of the fridge... ;)

I tried it too! I don't know exactly why but that tip jumped at me when I read it. It might be the fact that we buy lots of bananas and then we end up making smoothies or something like that because they turn black after only a few days.

Well, after the next trip we took the the grocery store, I got home and cut them off the stem and I was pleasantly surprised to notice that we went thru the whole bunch and no soft or black bananas. Or banana bread.

This tip works!

Also, if you separate bananas and then put them in the refrigerator, they will last a couple of weeks! What's even more amazing is that the skin will turn brown/black as usual, but if you peel the skin away, more often then not the banana is still fairly pristine!

I love random post kinda blogs! Those are the most fun. ;) Thanks for the tip on bananas! A very useful tip, indeed!

This is really useful! My daughters go thru spurts of eating bananas, and invariably the time I buy plenty, they'd start to go black before they'd get eaten. This may give me more time...

Thanks!

Thanks for "kitchen testing" this idea for us!! I remember reading this tip on your blog awhile back and meaning to try it, but I didn't. I also ended up tossing two mushy bananas from the last bunch I bought. Next shopping day I'm definitely pulling the bunch apart.

You know, I think that the bowl of bananas is pretty! Already taken apart and displayed like that, they look very "user friendly", in a kind of, "Hey! Grab me for a snack!" sort of way.
