Alaska Governor welcomes fifth child - with Down syndrome

Congratulations, dear Sarah - you're in for the time of your life! May your son Trig always be a blessing and a joy to everyone whose lives he touches!

Palin welcomes fifth child, a son named Trig Paxson Van Palin

JUNEAU — Gov. Sarah Palin gave birth Friday to her fifth child, a boy, about a month before her due date.

Trig Paxson Van Palin weighed 6 pounds, 2 ounces. A news release from Palin’s office says the 44-year-old governor and the baby are doing well and resting comfortably.

“Trig is beautiful and already adored by us,” said the Palin family in a written statement. “We knew through early testing he would face special challenges, and we feel privileged that God would entrust us with this gift and allow us unspeakable joy as he entered our lives.”

HT to Suzanne! I can't tell you how much I appreciate you all sending me news!

Love,

Beautiful piece, but I wonder why the writer had to end such beautiful article celebrating life with the sentence "Down syndrome is caused by the presence of an extra chromosome. It results in mental retardation, a characteristic broad, flat face and small head and, often, serious heart defects."

We all know what Down Syndrome is; why the need to remind us all not only of how serious it can be, but also the physical appearance of those diagnosed with it? I find that insensitive.

But kudos to the governor! And many blessings to her family and their new bundle of joy. How refreshing to hear of a governor handling politics and a large family!
