Jonny & Me: Our Amazing NYC adventure

Jonny's amazing New York adventure is now ready for viewing - along with my random commentary - just click below:

NYC: Jonny's amazing adventure

More random observations:

* In our three days in New York City, I never saw another individual with Down syndrome - nor have I in my three previous trips there (one with Sophia, one with Maddy, one with Tripp - do you notice a pattern here?). Since one in 800 births is a person with DS, and since I see people with DS in the community I live in, I'm not sure why this is.

* I don't think there are as many overweight people in Manhattan. Maybe because you get so much exercise walking. And maybe because it would be very difficult to move around in such a crowded place. Our little room barely had space to walk around the beds.

* New Yorkers wear a lot of black.

* Neck scarves are very common.

* Diversity is cool. Maybe it's my city roots (I spent some growing up years in Washington DC) .

* New Yorkers are friendlier than you expect - at least most of them.

* Living without a car is the most liberating feeling in the world. You can find almost everything you need within a few blocks. And you can get anywhere you want to go on public transit. No parking, no filling up with gas (nearing $100 for my Club Wagon), no insurance. Like many other things that are supposed to give us freedom, I began to sense my bondage to my car.

if I think of any other profundities I meant to share, I'll add them. And you can add your own. Right now it's off to the laundry for me.

Love,

What a wonderful trip! How fortunate you and Jonny are to be able to take such an exciting trip together for his Sweet 16th. It makes me want to check my statements to see if I've forgotten some "rewards" points on one of my cards. Thanks for sharing your pictures!

God bless you all.

Making wonderful memories.

I hardly ever see anyone here where I live (Baltimore) with Ds though yesterday on our Scavenger Hunt (homeschool field trip) in Annapolis we saw another tour group with just children with Ds and their parents.

Last weekend was our first trip to NYC. Our observations were first..."Don't you people understand if you'd move a hundred miles west life is TOTALLY different?" These people move around like sardines and don't think a thing of it! Then we noticed that most people around us weren't wearing wedding rings, people act like zombies on the subway, New Yorkers were way more polite than we expected except on the subway when they act like zombies, I did see a young lady w/ Down syndrome while we were at Columbus Circle - she was walking hand in hand w/ her father (I'm pretty sure they were tourists), things were not as overpriced as I thought they'd be - except for the hotel but I expected that...I have a lot more observations as well...I'm glad I went, not sure I care to go back though.

I loved the photo album! Jonny looks so happy in every picture. And he looked so handsome dressed up in his suit for the show. What a special memory you've given him for his birthday! I am looking forward to building special memories like that with my kids.
