Learning to handle family finances - input, please

Barbara,

I've shirked my responsibilities on this for years and now I don't have a clue on anything beyond write a check or ordering something online. My poor husband has done it all solo. Now he banks and pays bills online and due to my own laziness I don't even know what is going on.Can you or any of your readers recommend a really, really basic book to teach me how to do this.
Thanks
Judy

Love,

A big Hooray for husbands who like to handle the financial details of life! I hate it and am grateful for a husband who sees it as his solemn duty to manage our finances.

However, my guy is responsible to a fault and wants to make sure I understand how to manage our finances "just in case." So I have read several books on creating and maintaining a family budget. My favorite is "The World's Easiest Guide to Finances" by Larry Burkett. I have heard that Dave Ramsey's program is also excellent.

Hope that helps,

Elizabeth

Crown Financial Ministries has lots of good literature and a terrific bible study about this. Talk to your Pastor/Priest and see about it at your church. Not only does it teach you the skills but it will change the way you look at money. It really is a good thing.

I'm kind of late to this party... but have to say that the Larry Burkett materials have probably saved our marriage time and again. I think that is the same as the Crown Financial Ministries, yes?

There's another good book that I recommend called "A Live Well Spent"... I think it's by Ron Blue, but I don't have it handy. It's not so much the nuts and bolts, but the philosophy. Very encouraging.

And lastly, a very short but high impact read - Randy Alcorn's "The Treasure Principle". This really challenged me in the area of perspective... what do I really value.

I know that's not exactly what you were asking (!) but it's always good to lay the foundation before we pick out paint and carpet, so to speak.

I recommend "Personal Finance for Dummies" as well as Dave Ramsey's stuff.
