    The Little Red Hen
Hooray for a good work ethic! The little red hen asks but receives no help in her efforts to put bread on the table. Yet all who wouldn't help would like to eat. In a refreshingly old-fashioned triumph of moral consequences, they don't get to!

    Noisy Nora
Poor Nora! The loveable mousette experiences all the pangs of the child-in-the- middle, caught between the demands of baby brother and bossiness of big sister. Catchy meter, playful illustrations make for a wonderfully satisfying mouse's tale. Baby-Preschool

Norman Rockwell on vacations

goingcoming.jpg

Thought this would make you smile in the midst of summer outings and vacations. It's called Going and Coming.

Norman Rockwell portrayed so many situations that resonate with families. If he was left out of your education - which he may have been as the emphasis in art has for decades been on the meaningless, absurd, and downright desperate - please see Family-Friendly Art: Norman Rockwell.

You can pick up big, lush volumes of Rockwell to share with your kids - very very cheap for used copies at Amazon (click below). Or check your library.

My kids love Norman Rockwell. I got three hardback books from PaperbackSwap, and the kids will all gather around looking at the pictures and asking me questions: "Who is Uncle Sam? Is Rosie the Riveter a real person? What's this lady doing?"

Thanks for sharing. I love Norman Rockwell, and I'd love to get some cheap prints to put up in the children's area! I very often use them as illustrations on my blog.

Oh Barbara. . .So timely! I love Rockwell and have often thought that a great many of my own family vacation photographs would be great submissions for Rockwell-esque Americana art.

How about this one from our recent family trip to NOLA? http://momblogit.blogspot.com/2008/06/its-working.html

Doesn't it just perfectly capture the essence of a nice vacation photo of the childen? ;-)

I will be making a special trip to the library this week for some Rockwell books. . .what fun! Thank you for the great summer reading idea.

Milehimama,

I suggest buying or looking on PaperBackSwap for one of his books and then cutting out the pages to hang up for your children. One of the books I have, Norman Rockwell's Faith of America, has full page illustrations. Looks to me like they may be about 8x10, maybe 8x12. It's available "used & new" on Amazon for $1.71
