Saving Gas

This is a MUST-READ:

How to Save Money on Gas - 29 Tips

Print it out and share it with your hubby and teens too.

And if you have one of those hubbies who is a good ol' boy like many of the men around where I live who like to keep their pickups running while stopping by the 7Eleven for a Big Gulp - now is the time to stop that ridiculous practice! And I know whereof I speak because when Tripp and I first married and he used to leave his truck running despite my pleas not to, it once kicked out of gear and ran into a building.

Thus proving in some small way that when God said we were helpmeets He wasn't just talking about doing laundry :)

Even if you are fortunate enough not to be feeling the money crunch, I just can't see giving any more money to oil companies than we have to. But don't get me started on the subject of oil....

There are some great tips at the above site - some no-brainers, some worthwhile reminders and some really new ideas. It's on its way to my printer now and we will be discussing it at the dinner table tonight.

Thanks for the link to the article, Barbara! There are some really good tips stated there.

We haven't really felt the pinch, in a direct way, at the pumps. Although, it's still aggravating to be paying so much per gallon. However, we have adjusted our habits to help us keep the cost at the pump down. We're actually spending less, monthly, on our gas budget now, then we were a year ago. And my husband has a 135 mile commute every day. He now carpools with two co-workers. He sold his gas guzzling truck and bought, with cash, a small manual-transmission Saturn. He gets 45mpg by using quite a few of the tips on that list. A big one is driving 60mph on the interstate. He gets better gas mileage, he doesn't have to use his brakes as much, and he actually gets to work in the same amount of time, if not sooner, then he did when he was doing 75mph!

I just drove my mini-van on a 600 mile trek to New York. I set the cruise between 60-63 and I got 5mpg more than my usual interstate travel. It only added a little more than an hour of driving to our trip. I think that hour was worth my money saved at the pump, don't you? :) Plus, it was a more relaxing drive because I wasn't fighting traffic and I didn't have to worry about getting pulled over for speeding! :p

I was surprised there weren't more "hypermiling" tips, such as lifting your foot off the gas far in advance of a red light and coasting to a stop when you can.

Because those tips seem to be everywhere right now. And those tips? Got me rear-ended three weeks ago.

And it drives me crazy when people leave cars running--especially in front of schools where kids are breathing.
