New Yorker Obama cover - what do you think?

new_yorkers.jpg

I'm a little late posting this, but wondering what you think.

As someone who was a flaming radical liberal back in the days when New York's elite were inviting members of the Symbionese Liberation Front to their dinner parties (Tom Wolfe wrote about it in Radical Chic and Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers), I found this cover 100% amusing.

The New Yorker claims it was not intending to lampoon Barack and Michelle - after all, their messianic status among the mainstream media places them above criticism of any kind (see Is Obama caricature-proof?).

That's why I'm inclined to believe the New Yorker's claim that they intended to lampoon Obama's critics.

The thing is that the Obama's lack of patriotism is well documented. Michelle said on the campaign trail that for the first time in her lifetime she is proud of her country - because her husband was campaigning for president. What narcissism! And Barack of course has ties to an aging and unrepentant domestic terrorist (former Weatherman Richard Ayres) and a 20-year relationship with the infamous "God damn America" Jeremiah Wright (as quoted in a sermon).

Much as they are trying to moderate their image these days to win the election, I think their basic inclinations are indeed something to be of concern to those who will sit under their reign. But they and their friends in the Mainstream Media think we have no right to ask questions.

Hence the cover which the New Yorker says was intended to make skeptics look foolish.

I think it backfired - what about you?

On my way to buy a copy and frame it for posterity.

Love,

Yes, I do believe the NY intended it to be satirical and a snub to his detractors. However, if the turban fits...

BO's all up in arms about this. What? Now he's throwing cartoons under the bus? Sounds like he's playing the victim card to me. I can't remember EVER hearing, not once, any complaint from our current commander-in-chief about the infinite number of derogatory drawings of him. BO is a whiny, spoiled little Marxist.

It was obvious satire directed at loony Republicans. Unfortunately, the left's intelligence seems to have dropped drastically in the last 20 years or so, and they either didn't get it or are convinced the Republicans are too stupid to know it's satire and accuse the LEFT of being racist anti-Americans.

Either way, it's DE-licious.

I'm with you, Barbara! I think that they meant it as a satirical piece...but as Libby (PP) said, if the turban fits (lol)...

He's a vile piece of work. Ironic how in trying to present a satirical piece of "art", they hit the nail on the head. Just like the left...
