McCain's announcement / Palin's acceptance speech
Part 1:
Part 2:
Authentic. Real. Classy.
Everything the other women we've seen on the screen lately have not brought to the equation.
She doesn't need a Hollywood team to put together a compelling story. She has one. She is one.
Sarah Palin is the real deal.
And she never even mentioned her baby has Down syndrome - she's confident that people will learn who she is and that her life will speak for itself.
I watched this with Maddy, telling her that now we are really seeing history made.
Pumped up for Palin.

I am so excited about McCain's pick for Veep! She is the real deal. She has many accomplishments and seems to be a woman who lives by her principles.

I liked how she didn't mention her son had DS. His life didn't have more value or a bigger story because of his diagnosis. He was special, because he is. No more or less than her other four children. His life didn't have more value because of his special needs. His life simply mattered, no matter his special needs.

After hearing about Palin, I just had to stop by and see you today Barbara!

*loud applause*
I've liked this lady since she threatened to sue the government for putting polar bears on the endangered species list. It would have hamstrung not only Alaska's freedom, but the rest of the country would have seen their liberties take a dive through that terrible bill. I've been following her progress, and her actions speak louder than all Obama's pretty rhetoric.
An honest-to-goodness conservative. Didn't know if there were any left out there. I can finally sigh in relief.
YES! McCain/Palin in November.

Barbara and others:
I alsolike Palin very much, but I am wondering what everyone thinks of a woman hitting the campaign trail on a national level with a 4-month old baby?
I think this is going to come up.

Whoo hoo for Palin. I'm totally surprised and very please by what I know about her (admittedly little at this point, but so far I like it all). She's already brought a breath of fresh air to this election year.

Thank you, Ellen, for broaching the issue that I feel no conservatives are addressing.
I think the Republican party, which bills itself as conservative, needs to admit what they have done by running McCain and Palin on the ticket. When the GOP nominated McCain and when McCain chose Palin as his running mate, the party decided it was more important to defeat Obama than to be truly "conservative." If that is what the Republicans want to do, they are well within their right to do so, but they should at least be honest about it.
The party that claims to be unequivocally prolife has nominated a man who supports federal funding for fetal stem cell research and thinks it is ok to abort a baby if it was the result of rape.
The party that claims to be unequivocally profamily has selected a VP canidate who is the mother of an infant. Palin's baby deserves better than a mom who is busy being VP, and to be blunt, the US needs more than a VP whose first priority is her baby.
My husband and I have not been blessed with children. I don't have a fancy or stresful job, but I can't imagine being able to do what I do now while being the mommy my future childern deserve.
McCain and Palin may be the best the GOP can do in 2008, but the GOP should at least be honest about the fact that that isn't saying much.

In response to Ellen's question about a Mom w/a 4 month old hitting the campaign trail: If the Dems and the 5th column start down that path, they will show the world what hypocrites they really are...Gov. Sarah Palin is the epitome of the Working Mother. As the father of 12 and grandfather to 12, I am esctatic over McCain's choice. It gives me real hope that God is giving our nation the opportunity to possibly have some godly leaders in places of leadership that are willing to serve. Wouldn't it be interesting if Sen. McCain told us at the convention that he plans to be a one term president, (because of his age) and that if the people so decide, Gov. Palin could be the one to square off against Hillary in 2012. My bet is that Gov. Palin would knock the pantsuits off Sen. Clinton.
In order to discover the character of people we have only to observe what they love.

Barbara, this YouTube video is incomplete. If you look on my blog there is a post with 2 videos of the complete speech. (You don't have to post this.) Just an FYI.

With regards to being a working mother of an infant, please remember St. Gianna.
In canonizing Gianna Beretta Molla spring of 2004, the Church officially recognized
the extraordinary sanctity of a woman who chose to live an ordinary life-as a professional
and, later, as a wife and mother.
Gianna Beretta Molla is the first married laywoman to be declared a saint (though
there are many sainted widows). She is also the first canonized woman physician–a
professional woman who was also a "working mom" four decades ago, when
this was extremely unusual.
After her marriage and even after she had children Gianna continued her medical
practice, extending her gifts beyond her immediate family to the children of others,
Three children, a son and two daughters, were born between 1956 and 1959, and Gianna
had two miscarriages before conceiving another baby in 1961 Pietro and Gianna referred
to their children as their "treasures". She devoted herself to caring
for her patients, and her selflessness and dedication as a physician endeared her
to the people. Her husband did not object to Gianna's continuing her medical
practice after becoming a mother because she was so deeply attached to her patients.
Saint Gianna, pray for us.

Tripp,
You're right: Palin is the epitome of a working mother. I just didn't realize that was something conservatives wanted in a VP canidate.
I'm a woman. I'm by no means anti-woman. I think women can do amazing things.
No woman is capable of the being the mother that a four month old baby deserves while also being the VP the United States deserves.
A baby deserves to be it's mother's first priority.
The United States, especially in a time of war, deserves a President and VP whose first priority is the job they were elected to do.
Don't "profamily conservatives" see that when they celebrate the Palin pick they are actually celebrating the fact that a woman has decided to accept a job that by it's very nature demands that she put the job ahead of having time with her baby?
When Palin chose to be a mother she volunteered to put her baby's needs first. She has the rest of her life to be VP or even POTUS. Babies are only babies once.

OK, now I can understand the dems enthusiasm or feelings for their ticket because I'm thrilled and feeling alittle chris matthew-ish. This is brilliant. I am impressed and excited about this election now and it is truly historic. I knew where to look for information - to your blog. Thanks for providing.

Anna, throughout history fathers and mothers have had to obey God when He called whether they had children or not. Gov. Palin, like Esther in the Old Testament has perhaps been born "for such a time as this." It may be some consolation to you to know that Gov. Palin's duties as VP though important, will most likely not be as demanding and time consuming as the executive duties of a state govenor.
I happen to be married to the woman who in obedience to God serves many women and mothers through this blog. We have 5 children of our 12 left at home and 4 of them have Down syndrome. She works sacrificially for her family and for all of you... and we as a family, like the Palin family works together, work to support Barbara in her mission. That's what God calls us to do...serve one another....and in serving, comes the grace and strength to persevere and finish the race. I think we can all learn from the word picture Gov. Palin gave us in her acceptance speech when she said,"I didn't get into government to do the safe and easy things. A ship in harbor is safe, but that's not why the ship is built. Politics isn't just a game of competing interests and clashing parties. The people of America expect us to seek public office and to serve for the right reasons."

Thank you for posting this. I would not have voted for Obama no matter what. How awesome to have someone like her for VP. And as to why would someone run for VP while having a 4 month old, I would have to say, why not???
If a mother feels she can make a difference in this country it would benifit not only her children, but all of our children, why should she not do it?? As a stay at home mom with 6 kids, I say amen, about time, who better then a mother with kids one in the military to start change for a better place for all of our kids to live.
Not that she is saying she is running for that reason, but if she can change something for the better we ALL benifit. So Yeah, good for her. Great choice!!

CONGRATULATIONS to Sarah Palin who is about to become a grandma!! McCain and company was aware that Gov Palin's daughter and her boyfriend Levi are 5 months pregnant before he even accepted Palin's agreement to the VP nomination! The only reason they announced the pregnancy and the pending marriage between Levia anad Bristol is that there was a internet rumour that the baby the Palin's have was actually Bristol's.
Thoughts?
