Boyz just wanna have fun

When our sons Zach and Ben emailed in the spring of 2007 to say they wanted to move off campus and rent a house with some friends the next year, our initial response was NO! Too expensive. Too distracting. Grades would suffer. Etc.

But they sent us a very logical rebuttal comparing costs and showing how much money it would save. Also some anecdotal evidence that it would be less distracting than dorm life, and a promise that their grades would improve.

We were so impressed by the mature way they handled it - and convinced by their logic - that we gave them our blessing (which, I have to say, I am grateful they cared about).

Last year was a great success. They DID save a lot of money. and they became much more responsible - taking care of odds and ends like making sure to return things and get credit, hashing out problems with landlords, dealing with roomates who didn't have enough money for rent but had plenty for lattes.

Living off-campus with a group of fellow Christian guys really turned out to be a great idea. I am constantly thankful when God makes sure I am not being a stubborn parent but really listening to them and to Him for what is best.

Anyway, when they were home last weekend - with two friends, including housemate Chad - they said they had been to Walmart to get a "family" picture of the guys in the house. Trying for a tongue-in-cheek look, they all wore sweaters and bow ties.

Ben just sent me the results:

Love you guys!!

What a great photo! I'm so glad that the arrangement turned out to be a blessing. It's a real credit to you and them both that you were able to discuss it so well and that they've lived up to expectations!
