Obama on Letterman - presidential material?
Did you know Obama was on Letterman last night, yucking it up about losing his star quality (being replaced by Palin on magazine covers), the "silliness" of political campaigns - every one else's, of course, not his - and waxing eloquent on how he would have handled 9/11.
I checked YouTube to see which cut to add here, and then decided not even to go there. Watching Obama being given an opportunity to redeem his stupid gaffes from the past few days just made me ill.
How I long for the day when our national leaders no longer feel compelled to go on Letterman, Saturday Night Live and MTV to prove how cool they are. This all started with aging Baby Boomer Bill Clinton. I for one would like to see dignity restored to the office of President.
What next, Montel Williams? Jerry Springer?
What's sad is that so many Americans think this is the way to choose a candidate.

You are so right. Bill Clinton did so much to destroy the dignity of the office of President of the United States. What's even more sickening was seeing clips of Barack and Michelle (on different occasions) dancing with Ellen on her show. Unfortunately, you're right--this is the way that some people choose their candidate.

Since 2000, when he became nationally famous after his failed presidential bid John McCain has appeared on: Jay Leno: 13 times. David Letterman: 8 times. The Daily Show: 12 times (or 13?). Conan O'Brien: 3 episodes. Larry King Live: 9 times. Saturday Night Live: twice. Live with Regis and Kathie Lee (!): once Entertainment Tonight (!!): twice. The View: twice. Tony Danza Show (!!!): once. The man had a cameo in "The Wedding Crashers"! And in 2006, Senator McCain apparently appeared as an actor in an episode of "24"...

Judith -
Was this supposed to be a "gotcha!" moment?
There was certainly much I did not admire about McCain - and this is one of those things: his pandering to the leftist media trying to find favor in their eyes. It did indeed rob him of his dignity and make him look pathetic, knowing they were playing him only because of his attachment to his "maverick" image.
I hope now that they've turned on him that he would not make that mistake again.

I agree.
I think I gasped the first time one of our elected leaders did one of these shows.
When any leader participates in such nonsense, it just makes them, their office/position, and their authority a cheap joke.
Palin seems to have such outstanding qualities that I would be surprised to see her do such, but then.....the things that the parties ask of the candidates in hopes of grabbing another vote.....

I am going to have to disagree on this one. Maybe it is a generation gap thing but I like seeing the presidential candidates in a more relaxed setting...so long as they don't get too crazy.
Did you see McCain on SNL? You can see those clips at the website. The one with Palin and Clinton is pretty funny too.
