Expelled - Ben Stein documentary - giveaway
You've probably seen Ben Stein in the Visine commercials - or maybe Ferris Bueller's Day Off. What you may not know is that Stein is a brilliant economist/writer/columnist who for at least 25 years has led a double life using the tools of his academic trade while having fun/making money in Hollywood.
In the Six-Degrees-of-Separation Department, I can share that my son Josh met Ben Stein at a Young Americans for Freedom conference in Santa Barbara some years ago, and that Mr. Stein told Josh that I was a saint. While we all know that's not true, I did feel good about my son hearing that from someone he admires :)
Anyway, Ben Stein's new documentary Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed takes on the fiercely atheistic and close-minded academic community, which refuses to question or explore anything outside the Darwin party line, ridiculing and blacklisting those who are interested in a discussion of Intelligent Design. Yes, I know science is supposed to be about open minds and research. But Darwinism has become a religion more irrational than any of those they rail against.
"There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which can not fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance-that principle is contempt prior to investigation."
--HERBERT SPENCER
Ben Stein released a new documentary early this year which anyone interested in this debate should see. Of course it was panned by the press. After all, it's not coarse and angry and over-the-top like Michael Moore's stuff. But most importantly, it's not The Liberal Party Line.
However, even without the imprimatur of our Dinosaur Media, Expelled has become one of the top ten documentaries of all time.
ABOUT THE FILM:The film's success speaks for itself. It opened in the Top 10, achieving the number 5 position on a per-screen average. It has already made its place in history as the Number 12 Top Grossing Documentary of all time, and the Number 1 Conservative Documentary. The initial buzz about the film was so intense that it became the #1 most popular blog on the Internet (3/24/08), the #6 Top search on Yahoo (4/8/08), and received over 2 million web hits, more than any other movie's website during this time.
The film's numbers proved that freedom-loving Americans were outraged to discover that teachers and professors across the nation are teaching a theory as indisputable fact and that scientists who dissent from that theory are being silenced and ousted.
Ben Stein, the highly recognizable television personality, actor and former White House presidential speech writer, is on a journey to answer one of the biggest questions ever asked: 'Were we created, or are we the result of random chance - a mud puddle struck by lightning?' Stein, who is also a lawyer, an economist, an author and social commentator, is stunned by what he finds on his journey.
He discovers an elitist scientific establishment that has traded in its skepticism for dogma. But even worse, Stein uncovers a long line of biologists, astronomers, chemists and philosophers who have had their reputations destroyed and their careers ruined by a scientific establishment that allows absolutely no dissent from Charles Darwin's theory of random mutation and natural selection.
"Big Science in this area has lost its way," says Stein. "Scientists are supposed to be allowed to follow the evidence wherever it may lead, no matter what the implications are. Freedom of inquiry has been greatly compromised, and this is not only anti-science, it's anti-American."

I am a recent college graduate in the field of microbiology. While studying my major I was often confronted with Darwinism being the only logical way of viewing the creation of life, and any mention of Intelligent Design was quick to have a harsh reply about how it was not science. One of the professors at my university was fired for his involvement into Intelligent Design while I was a student. I think that this movie is an amazing tool that should be seen in college dorms across America. Students need to know the truth. They need to see the implications of social Darwinism. I would like to see this movie both for the science content, philosophy content, as well for the opportunities to show this to my friends who are currently in the sciences.

Thanks for the post. I don't think I've every seen anyone take apart Richard Dawkins in the way Ben Stein does. By the end of the interview, Dawkins asserts the impossibility of an intelligent designer while defending the plausibility that aliens seeded life on earth.
More importantly, Stein reveals the atrocities of those who were consistent in their application of Darwinism to society. More than once he asked if Hitler and his Nazi doctors were "insane" for the crimes committed against humanity. The answer, of course, was "no, they were not insane. Just consistent with their beliefs."

I would love to have a copy! Years ago, as a young biology major, a professor stressed that we would be studying from simplest to most complex and how that was determined - if we wanted to study evolution & terms to go down the hallway to Prof. --'s class. Years later I understood what was really being said.
Posted by: Stephanie in AR | October 21, 2008 9:28 AM
We saw it, too! My husband and I couldn't help but laugh at some of the insane statements the evolutionists had to say! This is NOT a dry, boring documentary! Everyone should see it!!
Posted by: Sara | October 21, 2008 9:36 AM
I would love a copy of this. I just saw a tv advertisement for it and was interested and your promo makes me want to see it more. Thanks for doing a giveaway! :o)!

Awesome! My son (16) went to see it with his "World Views" class at his school (The Daniel Academy)... He can't wait to see it again, and we can't wait to see if for the first time!
Posted by: Tracie Loux | October 21, 2008 9:44 AM
Oh heavens, that trailer...! I HAVE to see this movie!
I have always had tremendous respect for Renaissance Man Ben Stein (not least because he thinks you are a saint, Barbara!) If that amazingly articulate and intelligent man is concerned about something, we *all* need to listen closely and pay attention.
Thanks for letting me know about this, even if I don't win a copy of it.

I have been wanting to see this for a while! Great giveaway!
Posted by: Momma | October 21, 2008 9:48 AM
I didn't get off work until very late the night it played in our local theater - thought about going to the midnight showing but I'm not a night-owl so didn't manage to stay awake to go.
The reason so many people still believe in evolution is because they know so little about evolution, how the evolutionist scientists have feuded amongst themelves and have effectively destroyed each other's pet evolution theories, leaving no evolution theory standing that fits the facts and the evidence.
MOST believers in evolution believe it simply because they are uninformed and closed-minded. Making fun of creation science is NOT science - it's ignorant bigotry.

Ooooh! I went to see this at our local theatre when it came out. It is the only film I have been to see at a movie theatre in about 2 years. It was very good and worth my time. Hooray to hear it went well all over the country! If you haven't seen it, Netflix it ASAP!

Ben Stein is great.

We enjoyed this in the theater, and we almost never go see movies in the the theater anymore. We wanted to support this effort.
I was really impressed with Stein for making the eugenics/Nazi/Margaret Sanger/Planned Parenthood connection (noting how eugenics is an outgrowth of Darwinism). That took a lot of guts!

I could not see the movie when it came out, and I wanted to rent it, but my choices keep being pushed back by the kids choices; somehow momma's movies take the back seat when it comes selecting movies for the weekend.
I hope I get a copy! But if not I'll make it a point to rent it soon, specially after reading your review.
I hope all else is well by you!

Barbara,
Thanks for your insightful posts and links to other resources. I appreciate the work you do. (For another day - I've followed your conversion to Catholicism with interest because of a series of events in my own life. One of these days, I'll get around to sharing a couple comments about that). Oh, one more thing while I'm at it, we love your Mommy, Teach Me books. I use both of them with my two younger kids (ages 3 and 5) and am a homeschooling mom to all four of my children (second year). Blessings to you - Tracey

If you haven't done so, please read "The Language of God, A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief" by Francis S. Collins, head of the Human Genome Project and one of the world's most distinguished scientists. He encourages readers to find a unity of knowledge that encompasses both faith and reason. He explains how our understanding of evolution reveals a universe of great ingenuity and strengthens faith. This book gives "validation for a worldview in which God is not only present, but actively at work."

Liberals and secularists, etc... are so afraid of people of faith because we look to God for guidance and support and not them. If they can convince us that there is no Higher Power than we must rely on them for direction. A nation of thinkers is dangerous for them
