Liberals and "tolerance" - reality check

Is it just me?? Generally speaking, is the "right" anywhere near as vicious as the left toward those with whom they simply disagree politically? I know there are exceptions, but I just don't see on the right the widespread, completely accepted and completely base, vile vitriol that I have seen from the left in recent years. Am I missing it?? (The very existence and apparent nature of the movie "W", in particular, absolutely floor me. Clearly, no respect remains for even the office of the President.)It's a gang mentality completely separated from morality and respect, no matter what it preaches on the side. Our freedom will not stand.

Wow, I'm always amazed at how closed-minded some people are.

I just don't understand the double standard.
Very sad, really.
For all these people that chose lewd and profane words and gestures to express their political views... as my Grandmother Roena used to say, "Vulgarity is the attempt of the feeble mind to express itself."

There are no words...that is just pathetic.

I never thought "tolerance" was a very good word. I think a better word is "acceptance." To tolerate something is to merely put up with it; to accept is to experience a person or a situation and not try to change it. When you accept something, you acknowledge its existence and are respectful towards it. I think this is a better model for living than to merely "tolerate."

The thing that makes me shake my head in wonder is what they expect me to be tolerant of and the things that they themselves would never in a million years put up with. I'm supposed to be tolerant of lewd "pride" parades, of my future children being exposed to "sex education" programs at younger and younger ages, of forced "immunizations", of not being told if my daughter gets an abortion, of the absolute refusal to explore anything other than evolution, embryotic stem cell research, euthanasia, and the list goes on and on.
However if I even hint or mention the name of Christ or how I don't agree with any of the above issues based on my beleif in a higher power I am mocked, scorned, and made to feel like a second class citizen.
Well Christ said that they would hate me just as they hated him.

Wow! I really have no other words to describe how that made me feel. It kind of reminded me of Jesus' walk to the cross, but wait, he's not the messiah....Obama is, right? I wonder how many in the crowd know who the real Messiah is? At this point, I think that I just feel sorry for them for the behavior that they display.

I came face to face with some of that spewing vile this weekend.
While in Warrenton, picking up my kids from 5 hours of respite care, I left them in my car (which has THREE McCain sticker on the back window) to run into a 7-11 to get a pop. Jonathan, my oldest -who is MR/autistic- at 20, was jamming to his MercyMe CD....He really gets into his music.
Two guys parked near us said, "Look, it's retards for McCain...." I was SO mad. I don't approve of the use of that word, nor do I disrespect others' political views. It ended up with them asking me if I was also retarded, and was my son a product of incest...
It was BAD....
This is how they win. They tear people apart. They spew hatred. They fling mud at you. Obama is the leader of the political extreme party. A rallying call to all the wackos who've been marginalized by prevailing sanity.
Makes me so so sad. I wanted to slap them. But I walked away. Me and my vote are ready READY for election day. READY....

Suzanne your story makes me very sad.
This video is kinda how I feel when I try to have a political debate with my family :)

It's so sad that this happens in the land of the "free?"
Unfortunately, our freedoms are being stripped away one at a time and most everyone just sits back and watches.
I hate to think of the world my grandchildren will grow up in (my kids are only 1 and 2!)
I love your blog by the way!

Suzanne,
Are your of-age kids eligible to vote? I have always assumed that my son with DS would vote when he is of age. Don't they have "practice" ballots for people with special needs?
Barbara, do you know any information about people with developmental disabilities voting?

Ironic, Obama speaks of tolerance. These people obviously aren't for McCain or the Republican party. Obviously not tolerant of other views and beliefs. Most likely they are for Obama.
I watched Hannity and Colmes Sunday report on Obama's early years. Just one more reason I'm not voting for Obama.

... as if the FACT that Obama believes that unborn do not need protecting isn't reason enough.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.... Its amazing how many intellectuals refuse to use their intellect! Maybe I should make that into a bumper sticker. I bet it would sell... so would... I am not an ignorant, racist, hate monger just because I don't agree with you!

I didn't watch the video (limited time). But, Barbara, to your query about the left and right and tolerance and respect for the office of president, I do think that in the past the right has been more venomous. Clinton was in office less than one year, and my grandparents had all sorts of "Impeach Clinton" pencils around their house. Whereas, if the legitimate left were to talk of impeachment, much less actually pursue it, they would be viewed as pariahs. I'd like to see more respect for the office of president no matter who sits in the office. ;-)
By the way, I have a son with Down syndrome. Not all people that have children with Ds are members of the religious right. I didn't even have an amnio because I didn't want to risk losing my precious star.
I wish people had more manners across the board. Language in the public sphere is truly appalling these days. Mandi, I am so sorry for your experience.
